This is my 1984 Trans Am. I've owned it since June 6th, 1991, and I have relocated the car across the country after I moved from NY to CA. The first of the car's mods was an engine upgrade from the original LG4 305 to a 1975 Chevy 350. It was a mild street engine, but much better than the sorry LG4.
The real mods happened here in CA. After driving across the country and towing it back with my friend Curtis, I upgraded the suspension and brakes with Wilwood 4 piston calipers and rotors. I replaced the tired suspension with a PST front end kit, Spohn strut tower caps, wonder bar, Eibach springs and KYB shocks/ struts. I also installed an Edelbrock Panhard bar, torque arm, 3:73 posi disc rear (from another '84 T/A) and an LS1 driveshaft. I also had some sub-frame connectors welded in.
This winter I purchased a 2002 LS1/ 6 speed trans from International Auto Wrecking. It had around 22k on the odometer and came with all the parts I'd need to make my swap possible. After bringing it all home, I sent the computer and wiring harness to Speartech to have it reprogrammed and the harness set up for an easier installation. I'm glad I did. It really was a lot easier, though, I had many questions and had to call back a few times. But that's me, I ask a lot of questions.
Props go to my friend Curtis, and my neighbor Craig. Without either of their help I wouldn't be driving the car now. Thanks, guys! Anyways, Curtis and I installed the engine and I worked on the remainder installation during my evenings after work.
It took longer than I had hoped, and I did have a couple electrical issues to sort out before it would start, but for the most part, it was straight forward. I did find myself temporarily set back as I'd discover what parts I'd need and would have to order them or wait until the next day to get them. These kinds of things could happen to anyone, I suppose.
My goal is to have this emmisions legal for use in CA, so I kept all the smog pieces and to comply with the way-too-liberal state of California, I have to use all the oem smog pieces from the donor car. No big deal as I was able to grab everything from said donor car.
As it is now the car is running and driving. I have everything hooked up (except air conditioning, which I'm working on) and all I need to do is make the appointment for the referee to inspect and certify the car.
I had to get some custom exhaust work performed on the car. I took it to a local shop where they installed the 02 sensors and made a head pipe. The driver side 02 sensor stock location won't work on a 3rd gen swap. I had them relocate it. The passenger side cat wouldn't fit either, so it had to be re-angled to fit. The finished piece is great, but it's a little low. I have to be careful on speed bumps and dips in the road.
I also had to get the car re-aligned after the swap. The lighter engine and components threw the toe in off. Easy fix.
For those who are considering the swap- I say do it! The drivability of this car is much better. Speed, fuel efficiency, everything. Plus, it'll give the car a much longer life and a more fun one while you're at it.
I've since added air conditioning to the car as seen in pic #14.
