****This is for the 87-95 Jeep Cherokee.****
I was going to get a few things done yesterday, but ended up not getting anything done! Couldn't find my 3/4" spacers to level out the front end. I was going to pop the new 134A alt in, but that looked like more of a job than I bargined for with only about 1 hour to play with.
Sinse the camera was out, decided to do a little write up on adjusting the tension on the Serpentine belt.
Tighten/Loosen the Serpentine Belt
On the top of the power steering bracket there is a 1/2" bolt, on eth pre 90 the bolts are 13mm. Actually all the bolts that will loosened are 1/2" or 13mm bolts, so I will just refer to them as bolts. The top bolt is pictured here:
There is also a bolt that is to the left and down from the top. It is a support and it is through a bracket that has a slot in it that allows movement. Loosen this one as well:
Once that bolt is loose, you need to locate the adjustable bolt. It is on the right hand side, and under the resivoir, of the steering pump and is pictured here (the end of the screwdriver is pointing at it):
Once you locate this adjusting bolt, follow it under the pump and you will see another bolt that holds it in place. I loosened that one some as well. It is pictured here:
You then need to look behind the power steering mount and you will see two bolts on the back side. There are slots on each one that allow the bracket to move in and out. You need to loosen both of these. Here is a under side shot, this was the easiest way to get to the lower one, and actually made it easier to loosen and tighten the upper as well. The scewdriver tip is pointing to the lower bolt.
Here's a shot of the top bolt from the top, between the front end of the manifold and the powersteering.
Once all these are loose, loosen the adj bolt to (righty tighty, lefty loosey, like a standard bolt) allow the bracket to come in and loosen up the belt. You may have to push down on the top of the power steering pump top to get it going.
There you go, just do the reverse to tighten it up
