Installing the T5z 5 speed

Not much to say on this one. It's been done so many times, with so many writeups not much is new.
I will say that adding the 5 speed in a 6 cylinder car makes the car feel like it has way more power. Freeway on ramps that I could barely get up to 55 with the 3 speed, I am now getting on at better than 60mph. And I do not miss that non-syncro first gear of the old 3 speed.
I purchased everything but the transmission from
Modern Driveline I really like their cross member. Fit was perfect, and tight to the transmission for more exhaust pipe room. The adapter plate (from California Pony) did not have reliefs for the bolt heads securing the throw out bearing flange. Took about 10 minutes with a die-grinder to make the proper reliefs.
I added a Hurst shift lever and ball to the stock T5z shifter, and the leather boot from a Fox body car.
The driveline had to be lengthened slightly and is on it's second rendition after adding the 8.8" rear end. At this point the whole tube has been changed, and could easily handle the power of a V8.
Installing the 5 speed took an afternoon. Other than the driveline (which took almost two weeks due to an incompetent shop) the rest was very easy. With a 6 cylinder the angle changed from 3 degrees to 4 degrees. I compensated the rear end by adding 1 degree shims. There is no vibration, but I am looking forward to installing a V8 and getting back to the original 3 degrees (of course that's not the only reason).
Took a bit to break in the shifter, and the lever is about 2" forward of stock, so there is a slight reach. That is easily corrected, and will be done when I install a better shifter.
It was a great upgrade and really made the car fun to drive.
The only other issue is with the speedo cable. The stock 3 speed cable is very tight. I picked up the recommended cable from Modern Driveline, and it is way too long. Everyone else is saying to use the C4 speedo cable. I'm going to measure what I have now and see which will be the best fit. I'll update this page when I get this answered.
**** Sep/06 got the perfect answer. NPD sells PN 17260-1A
65-66 6 cyl., W/4sMT or C4 replacement, 64 15/16". This cable is absolutely perfect. Does not come with "O" ring, so if your "O" ring is worn you will need to add PN 17298-1. Also you need to trim up the inner cable at the transmission end so that the gear runs smooth. Mine was about 3/8" too long.
For the reverse light wire harness, I made one from the neutral safety switch that came with the transmission. I broke the tabs off, pulled the wires through the rubber plug and soldered on some bullet connectors, then pushed them back up inside the rubber plug. This fits very nicely on the reverse switch. The other end I soldered to the stock wires after cutting off the reverse light switch, added heat shrink tube and wrapped the wires with wire wrap tape. The whole thing looks factory.
It ruins the neutral safety switch, but saved me a trip to the wrecking yard to buy this part of a wire harness.
