Here's what i started out with. A 1971 stock malibu dash column shifted, and a bench seat. You know that wasn't stay like that for long. Time to start putting the SS in the interior.
First thing to go is that stock malibu dash. I'm replacing it with this 1972 SS dash. I wish i had pics of it before i redid it. I took out the idiot lights and opted for the factory guage package. Had to rewire the dash harness
There now it's installed
Floor shift auto steering column after i refinished it.
Steering column installed. Also you can see my next project: the center console.
Center console done and painted.
Before i can paint the interior, i need to repair these dents in the firewall.
There! The firewall dents are gone. I haven't had any autobody repair experience before this.
Here's what it looked like after i took out the dash assembly and defroster ducts.
Took the firewall down to bare metal and hit it with self etching primer.
Now the firewall is painted and the insulation installed.
Console rear mounting bracket.
Started putting the carpet in.
Rear seat, and seat belts installed.
Pic of the rear carpet.
Nice view of the bucket seats.
Front carpet with 4 spd bezel and shift boot.
Finished painting the firewall.
Pic with the pass side sill plate and console in.
Firewall with the wire harness attached.
Old rear seat cover. It looks like it was originally green then some body taped off the insets and painted it black. Of all the things to mask off.

Rear seat upholstered. Cost 65.00 elapsed time 1.5 hrs.
Now the rear seats match the front buckets.
Here's the 4 spd shifter installed.
Rear package tray insulation prepped for install.
Now the holes are cut out.
Stripped down the dash, and took off the metal reinforcement frame.
Old rusty frame.
Took the frame to work and media blasted it during break.
Mint condition stereo dash pad for my chevelle, just given to me.
2 good 71 chevelle cigarette lighters.
Installed the rear package tray and the speaker grilles.
Finally got around to painting the dash. I started by washing it with dish washing liquid and thoroughly drying it. Then masking off the painted letters. All that prepping for the chrome spray paint for the edges of the bezels and trim.
Here i have all the chrome trim masked off.
Finally it's black again.
Removed the masking tape off the chrome trim.
Now i reassembled the cluster and all the finishing items.
Here is the dash with the new dash pad on it.
I installed the dash today with the dash pad.
Rear window defogger out of a muscle car graveyard. 40.00 from my friends at muscle cars only. I had to crawl in the rotted trunk of a 1972 monte carlo that had another car sitting on top of it. The back window was shattered and had rained on the defroster for a while. When i got it back home, i hooked it up to a battery to test the motor. Nothing happened. I tried to lube it with pb blaster. No luck. So i tore the motor apart. I inspected the armature, commutator, slip-ring and brush condition. They all checked out ok. The front bearing was tight though. I managed to free the bearing and get moving smoothly. I then reassembled the motor and retested it. This time it was a success. When it spins the only thing you can hear is air circulating.
Here's all the defogger parts after a thorough cleaning.
All the cool stuff i got today at carlisle all gm today. 71 chevelle big block fan shroud, 71 chevelle complete power window setup, 71 defogger motor, and the 1/4 panel vents.
First I had to remove the front doors and drill holes in the doors and and cowl panel.
Checking the fit of the rubber bellows.
Taking the manual regulator out. When you do this first you have to remove the glass so there is room to get the regulator out. Then put the power regulator in and reinstall the glass.
Ran the power feed wire from the horn relay to the circuit breaker.
Same thing different view.
Had to figure out the wire routing for the rear window harness. Didn't have any pics to reference the routing.
Pig tail for the relay. Also shows the dimples already stamped into the cowl. These are where you drill the holes for the relay.
Dry fit of the relay and power wire.
Old rusty broken circuit breaker.
Same circuit breaker fixed and cleaned up.
Final install.
Power window relay cleaned up, tested and ready to install.
Finally installed.
Tested the windows operation in the car. Just have some minor tweaking yet, and it'll be perfect!
