1999 Subaru Outback with HORN subwoofer
Many of you may be aware of the LAB subwoofer project on the pro audio forums at Prosoundweb. If not, a custom horn subwoofer was designed by Tom Danley and Eminence offered to make a custom run of a driver to his specifications. This page and the following ones show off my design process utilizing this horn driver in an automotive environment. The entire enclosure design is my own work from CAD modeling all the way to completion. Version 1 of this subwoofer was created during the last semester of my senior year in Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech. Version 2 mk1 was recently completed after graduation. The pictures seen here are of version 2 mk1. Version 2 mk2 is in the pipeline for the next couple of weeks and is only a small modification. Please enjoy and feel free to drop me a line and ask questions.

This is the Subaru Outback in question with no exterior modifications. I've only had this vehicle for two months and I have additional stereo mods planned as time and money allow.

This is the actual view from the rear gate of the subwoofer in its final position. The horn mouth exits at the gate and uses the rear curvature of the car as an extension of the horn mouth. This technique improves low frequency cutoff and makes the horn seem larger than it actually is. In this picture you can see the Audiobahn 8002T which is 800W RMS bridged into this single subwoofer.

These two pictures show the access panel with the subwoofer mounted underneath it. There are all kinds of neat things you'll need to know that I will share in the next couple of pages in case you want to tackle a project like this yourself!

This is of course the obligatory head-unit shot. This is a Kenwood MP828 which has full equalization, variable crossover slope and frequency, as well as driver time alignment. All these really features help the system to stand out and surprise the heck out of people.
