Latest addition to the stable of X-bodies .. yes, I know , we're sick :-)

SailorAL's 1978 Pontiac Phoenix

here's the beast ( as it's now known, lol ) as sold.
Story to go pick it up is an adventure in itself, my dad and myself drove 432 miles, 8 hours + on the road, $ 155.00 in diesel for my Chevy van, lost the muffler on the way down, and arrived home with this nice blue Pontiac X-body on the trailer.

here she is, unloaded and parked next to our NY native 79 Nova

Car has 29,000 original one owner miles, 305 automatic, and is one of 3252 Phoenix hatchbacks built in 1978
also odd on the car is the lack of options or trim, other than the V8 it has column shift auto, power steering, brakes and A/C
however, I always thought the Phoenix was the 'upscale' model but, although it does have the delux (arg :-( .. sound deadener, and woodgrain door panel accents, it has a base mirror ( no day-night ),no wheelwell moldings, no chrome window trim ( even the 6 cyl 79 had that), etc.

only problem, the minor rust in the trunk turned out to be 25 years worth of the hatch leaking and the trunk is shot.. huge holes when we scraped the aformentioned sound deadener out - now who in thier right mind puts felt / jute style padding in the spare tire well of a hatchback ? engineers should be slapped hard a few hundered times....
anyways, we pulled the entire interior to be sure it was not similarly rusted ( it's not, YAY ), and will be rebuilding the trunk floor and have her on the road soon, I hope ( and pics as we go )
I know some enthusiasts shy away from the non-Nova X-body cars, but this one is really growing on me, both for it's condition and it's uniqueness.

too late for that - the rusted NY rally now has no trunk floor and no passenger side quarter panel.. soon to be reduced to parts and scrap. (tried selling it for years with no takers due tot he ammount of rust, so it's best to use parts than let it rust away worse and be of no use at all ) .
