Updates- Newest at bottom

This page is for updates on progress towads a much better running truck. Many thanks go to Jeff at 73-87.com and the members at The 1947 - 1998 Chevrolet & GMC Pickup Message Board Network for helping me learn about, work on, and slowly modify my truck.

June 13, 2006- I pulled the spark plugs from cylinders 2 and 4 today, and they both indicate that the engine is running about as lean as you can get before falling over. Plans tomorrow are to pull the distributor cap and inspect the internals. It was just discovered by a forum member that the choke arm is disconnected. That is to be resolved also.

June 14, 2006- I have looked into the choke arm, and it has come completely out on both ends and the clip for it is resting in the hole where the lever is, so the top plate will probably have to come off. I have removed the distributor cap and the rotor appears to be in good condition. Next is the coil check...(per 73-87.com's tutorial).

the rotor is completely clean, only minute deposits on the very edge.

from the power to tach terminal was 0 ohms
from the tach to the coil was rangine from .002 to .009 ohms
from ground to coil was .002 ohms.

The choke has been fixed. Talking with people online, i have been pointed to use (in order of fixation)

Autolite plugs (2.59 each = 22.43)
Accel wires (29.99 each = 32.47)

EITHER/OR:
EITHER:
MSD Cap and Rotor kit (Jegs #121-8416)
Matching MSD HEI coil and modulator
OR
Summit HEI distributor

Quadrajet Rebuild or 3310 Holley

I fixed the Timing today, it runs MUCH better.Timing light didn't work, so went off sound and left some on the table. See the Video from June 15

Played with my gremlins today, the electrical ones. Turns out theres a broke wire or something going to the roof lights because none of the 5 work and all the tails work fine.

Add to list of needed things: 9 clearence light bulbs (luckily not needed all at once).

Well, after completely pulled out the gauge cluster, I fixed most of the lighting problem- A few wires had come loose. So now thay all work.

June 20, 2006

Installed a tach and fixed the speedometer cable, which came out when I pulled the dash out.

neutral progress. Picked up 2 of the 5 roof lenses, however, on the way back I had to park the truck on the side of the road for a few hours after the temperature gauge pegged. Upon further review, it turns out to have been an electrical gremlin (didn't i just take care of one of those?).

June 29, 2006

temp gauge is fixed (wire came loose), 2 of the roof lenses and 3 of the fender lenses are on the truck, but after looking at my truck while at a friend's house, found out the entire rocker panel on the passenger side of the cab is cancered out, as are the door bottoms.

July 31, 2006

Dropped the driver side gas tank today and replaced all the fuel lines to it. Also checked tire pressures, the rear inners were all but flat. Put 60 in the fronts and rear outers and 70 in the rear inners.
