All right, mods...wee. I plan to turn this RX-7 into a full track car that can still be street legal...well, mostly. I just bought an '88 RX-7 Turbo II that was someone's failed project, so I gained a lot of performance parts for real cheap! The key to this project is going to be in it's weight. I am following the old Colin Chapman mantra to "add lightness". Therefore I've removed everything unnecessary: air conditioning, power steering, power windows, power mirrors, power seatbelts, rear wiper assembly, gutted interior, etc. I will be replacing the doors, hatch, front fenders, and hood with fiberglass parts. The rear hatch and door glass will be replaced with lexan pieces. The heavy pop-up headlights will be converted to flush-mount headlights. The sunroof components will be removed and the roof welded shut to reduce weight, increase rigidity, and lower the car's center of gravity. A Braille Auto carbon fiber battery will replace the heavy stock battery, mounted in the passenger area. A carbon fiber diffuser, GT wing, and canards will be added to enhance aerodynamics. Suspension will consist of Tein circuit master coilovers, Energy Suspension bushings, and Mazdaspeed magnesium alloy wheels paired to Advan A048 tires. The engine will be rebuilt or replaced with all-new components, balanced, and streetported. I have yet to decide on a turbo, but it will be supported by 750cc primary and 1600cc secondary injectors, a fuel pressure regulator, Walbro 255lb/hr fuel pump, GReddy front mount intercooler, GReddy blow-off valve, Koyo radiator with a SPAL electric fan, and either a Haltech E6X or MoTec M2R engine management system. Output should be somewhere around 350-400whp. I am hoping to build an extremely capable (and presumably competitive) track car that can be used for track days, autocross, and time attack. This project would be considered "low-budget" as far as race cars or industry standards are concerned, but for me it's quite a high-budget build. Nonetheless, I've managed to pick up almost all performance parts used to save $$. So far, my budget for the car is roughly $5000 including the car. I still have a lot to do, though.
So far I've accumulated (but have yet to install due to the need for an engine rebuild) the following parts:
Walbro 255lb/hr fuel pump
GReddy front mount intercooler
GReddy RS blow-off valve
GReddy Profec B boost controller
GReddy turbo timer
SX Performance fuel pressure regulator
Mazdaspeed ground wire kit
Mazdaspeed MS-01 wheels 17x7 35 front 17x8 35 rear
cross-drilled and slotted rotors
Cusco 6 point roll cage
lightweight pulleys
MOMO Start bucket seat and custom brackets/sliders\
ACT 6 puck clutch
ACT Prolite flywheel
