and this is what the car looks like now...

SoundBoy4's 1988 Porsche 944

At this point i'd say most of my money has gone into restoring the car. I threw in some Piaa performance lights which give the fogs a nice yellowish hue. I've put in things like new floor mats, shift boot, pedals, fixed tears in the leather, replaced old parts with new stock ones etc...

As far as making the car faster i put in a Weltmeister performance chip, a VTX power inhaler, a short shift kit, and a throttle responce cam (which pretty much only makes it FEEL more powerful). For all of you guys with N/A 944s i think the inhaler and chip are a great way to boost HP without spending an insane ammount of money. I definitely felt a difference after putting those in. October of '03 i got an SFR exhaust too, more info on that at the bottom. I also just replaced the clutch in Feb. of '03. The 944 has a hydraulic clutch so when you replace it make sure you get one you like because there will not be much room for adjustment if you want it to engage differently than it does. The car also has a cambermeister strut tower brace.

SoundBoy4's 1988 Porsche 944A couple of months ago i had a bit of a confrontation with a squirrel who is lucky to be alive. To make a long story short, i dented the back left rim and i decided to go ahead and replace the ol phone dials with some 16" carrera (Design 90) rims which i had re-alloyed also. The rear ones are wider than the front ones too, i think they fill up the wells real nice!
Here's a pic of the Old rims Vs. new rims, i think the carreras are definitely nicer, too bad only Porsche fanatics would really notice.

Along with the wheels i got some Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s. They have great grip and tread water like it's nobody's business. On the right is a pic of me having some fun down a VA backroad ;)

I wore out the 712s in about exactly a year, so for the sake of trying out new ones i got the Kumho Ecsta MXes from Tirerack.com. The front are 205/55 with 225/50 on the rears. I've had the tires for about three weeks now and all i can say is...WOW. It really makes you appreciate how important a good set of tires can be for great handling. They stick to the ground like glue, and look nice while theyre at it ;) i'd hate to just roll on such nice tires on the street, so i put them to the test at an autocross in Greensboro, NC. You can read about how that went on page 3.

Here's the cockpit before the new gauges and Momo steering wheel. Man this car is fun to drive. You know how with 944's it seems impossible to fit a new shift knob since the shifter is just like... part of the car? Well i found these people in Miami called Vertex Automotive (I have a link up top, call them and they'll send you a catalog) who sold me this little adapter that let me fit a Momo Race shift knob. It definitely feels more natural than the stock one.

As far as stereo is concerned i replaced all the stock speakers with 2-way Alpines. They sound a whole lot better than those old ones it had when i bought it. They are real crisp but lack a little bass. I also went with an Alpine head unit which i have no complaints of.

Here's my couzin Jon tearing up my dash, i know it sounds nasty but everything turned out ok. He took apart my cluster and painted it the same color of the car, it ended up looking really sweet.

I really like the sunroof on these cars. the whole thing can tilt at an agle, but you can also take the whole thing off (it's in the back in the pic) which leaves the top completely open. It makes for a nice drive on a sunny day. Here's a good shot of the VTX inhaler if your curious, probably should have taken it when it was new eh? I purchased it from Vertex Auto in miami, i've got their website under my favorite links up top. That manifold definitely needs a power wash or something...

December of '03, just put in a Weltmeister strut tower brace. I bught it from Paragon Products (Link up top). After testing it out in a few open parking lots the car still understeers a bit into hard turns, but a little pressure off the gas and the car snaps back into the turn. It is a noticeable difference but new sway bards will definitely have a bigger impact on performance, so those are next in my plans i think. One thing's for sure it looks pretty sweet :)

What the heck, a few more pics. Shoulda turned the fogs on in the bottom one...

Here's a pair of snow pics i took in January of '04

I also installed a SpeedForceRacing exhaust. It's a 2.5" Cat-back exhaust with a 4" tip. I chose an oval muffler with oval tip to preserve some of the stock look of the car, it's all polished stainless steel that UPS weighed in at 20 lbs. I plan on getting the car dynoed in the next month or two so i'll post the results to see how much of a difference it made. I definitely lost a little bit of low-end push but the car feels a lot more responsive up top now, it sounds great too. Definitely one of the best exhausts you can get for your P-car, check my SpeedForceRacing link up top and give Tim a call if your interested. If you order a new exhaust don't pay for someone to install it. Instead invest in four jackstands and a floorjack, it was a really easy bolt-on installation that takes no longer than an hour.

Really beautiful 944 you have there! I've always loved 944s and I plan on getting one in a few years and keeping it as a collector/show car. Check out my Formula when you get a chance.

Nice 944! I have a 86 n/a 944.
I got a question about the vtx inhaler,Did you feel a horsepower increase when you first put it on? And would you suggest getting one?

Nice ride man. You made the right choice going with Porsche. I wish my dad would trade his BMW X5 on a 911. I have a 74'911S project going on down in Kinston. Check it out.
