This is my dads 1970 Ford Maverick. He has had the car for about 20 years now. When He bought it back in the 80's off of Keith Jones all it was, was the body and four wheels. So He begun working on it and dropped in a 289 from a Comet, and raced it for about 5 years down at the local drag strip (K.C.I.R.) it ran low 12's. But He got tired of having to work on it all the time so he decided to go up in size. He bought a 351W off a guy and stripped it. He put a Crowler cam in it high duration made for a 289. And He put a Eldebrock Victor Jr. Intake manifold on it, a Msd distributor with some Accel spark plug wires. A Holley 750 carberator 4 barrell. And a K&N air cleaner with an X-stream lid cover. He also installed a gas cool can that lets the gas get cooler. The radiator is from a 70's mustang and still works good. The Maverick has some huge shock towers so my dad had to ding in the headers a little just for it to fit in.
It has a 1970 mustang 9 inch rear end, with a Zoom ring pinion. It has some Mark Williams 35 spline axles becuz recently it snapped a 31 spline in half. It has some slicks on the back made by Mickey Thompson they heat up real good so they dont require a huge burn out. It has a Top-Loader 4 speed manual with a Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch. He built the 351W engine in late 1991 and is still running strong. All he has done is normal maintance. Most people have to rebuild there engines every two years but my dad hasnt even had to at all. The car runs consistently. It does an average of 3 foot wheelies but when he first had the engine in it it did about 4 foot wheelies but calmed down. When it had the 289 it did about 2 foot. My dads known as the wheelie guy at K.C.I.R. people tell him he needs wheelie bars but he loves to make the front wheels raise up. Everything is still in good shape even after being used for about 2 times a month with about 20 runs in the quarter mile. He shifts at 6 grand. But the cool thing is its true motor no Blower,Turbo, are nitrous. My dad is 55 and well he dont want it any faster. If he put a blower and shifted at about 7000rpm it would probably run low 10's but he dont becuz he dont want to have to rebuild the engine that much. He also completly lightened the car he took everything out of it and made it weigh less so it would go faster. Lightneing a car can be a huge improvement in speed u should consider rotation mass and all the goodies. Well thats about all i know about the car myself. If U would like to know more email me and i can ask my dad. Later BEN
