My car is an Emberglo 1966 Mustang coupe powered by a 289 2bbl and a C4 automatic transmisson. She has Parchment with Emberglo appointments Pony interior and factory AC! My stallion even as two of the factory paint inspections under the hood!
Here is a short synopsis of how the right pony finally found it's way to me. My love of Mustangs goes deep and far back into my childhood as my Mom had two ponies over that course of time. The first I remember was a 1968 Springtime Yellow coupe. I don't remember what it had for an engine but it was an automatic tranny. She got the car a small used car dealer in Whitman Mass. called Sullivan Motors. I still remember the night we picked it up though the exact year escapes me. She even took it to a local Ford dealer and got the shifter bushing recall done when she found the recall notice in the glove box. My Mom drove that car for several years as I remember then one rainy day while out running errands we pass by another small used car dealer named H&L Auto Sales in Brockton, Mass. and she spied a 1972 Mach I of all things! The Mach I was red and black and had the 351 with an automatic tranny. She spun that old 68 coupe around and went and bought that Mach on the spot! I was lucky enough to be coming into my driving age while she had this car and drove it with and without permission on many occasions. Mom eventually sold the car for more reliable transportation as the Mach was rotting out badly as they do here in the northeast. The last time I saw this car a young fellow had restored it and did a fine job but I don't know if he still is around or has the car anymore.
Through my years I owned many a Mustangs some roadworthy and some not so good. My first was a 68 coupe that was supposed to be red but was mostly red, primer and rust and I don't mean rust color. She had a 289 2bbl and despite her looks she really could fly and leave rubber to boot. I am surprised looking back now that that car didn't just fall apart with the hole shots I left. I purchased a 68 coupe parts car also shortly thereafter to try to make one good car. The parts car was originally a 6 cyl car but had no engine or tranny in her at all. I still remember a friend of mine using a tow rope to tow the parts car home with me "driving" it behind him. the tow rope broke and he didn't notice I was gone for about 5 miles or so and he had to come back for me. Wish we had cell phones back then.... I eventually sold these cars as they were well beyond my abilities to fix them. From those I went to a 68 convertible but that was also frame and floor rotted beyond my means and was sold. I then purchased the car I thought I would have for life and probably still would have if not for....It was a 65 coupe 6 cyl 3 spd manual with no frills but the car was in great shape. I loved that car like it was my family. One bad night and one bad decision the car was gone in a heartbeat, never to ride again. See it was October in the northeast and I had the car off the road for the winter and was driving my winter beater. Well at the local cruise spot this unusually warm night the boys had their cars of summer out for one last blast. I went home and swapped the plates over from my beater, wrote a quick bill of sale to myself and out I went. Everything was fine until the ride home when a drunken hit and run driver totaled my car. I was fine but the car was gone. The problem was with the winter beater plate I only had basic insurance and it would not cover my car. Lesson learned the hard way! A friend at the time sold me a 66 6 cyl coupe with rusted floors but it was a Mustang and I am forever grateful for the deal he gave me and for what he was trying to do for me. Many other Mustangs including that one came and went as they ranged from a 66 convertible which was sold only to get my own place at the time to 64-1/2 coupe, 65 convertible, to a 65 coupe. All of these were in need of repairs and never quite made it for one reason or another.
Which brings me to my current and hopefully lifelong ride. I realized along with my wife Mary that we should get a Mustang that would be a little more price wise but so that it would not be beyond my abilities to bring it to where I wanted to. My dream has always been to have a nicely optioned car and restore it back to original condition. This 66 coupe is solid as a rock body and structure wise but need the cosmetic things done which can be handled by me. I found the car on Ebay and it missed the reserve price by $45.00! I got in touch with the seller he told me I could buy it for the reserve price so I asked for some specific pictures to show the car solid and he obliged. A friend, my wife and I set out that next weekend to New York to buy the car and did so and brought it home on a trailer. The car probably could have been driven home but I figured better safe than sorry this time.
I will show progress from this car as I go along and hope that people will let me know what you think and please send links to your site too. I love reading other people's stories and seeing their cars.
