Brakes, Wheels, Tires & Suspension

The stock wheel, tire and brake combination was no weak point. The 4-wheel disc antilock brakes could stop this land yacht from 60mph in 120ft. That's quicker than a BMW 740i back in 1996. But you know the old saying, "There's always room for improvement."

I started out kind of slow and I was on street tires, but as got better it showed as I went from 51 out of a field of 63 to 9 out of 77 (less instructors of course).

Oct 2004 - 51/63
Jan 2005 - 52/80
May 2005 - 38/80
Aug 2005 - 11/74
Nov 2005 - 9/77
Dec 2005 - 16/74 (Lost power steering pump)

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala I sold the chrome plated stock rims because the chrome kept flaking off.  I picked up this set of Boyd Coddington wheels on a sweet deal from a teacher in CA with an Impala SS. The wheels are 18" x 9-1/2" Signature Series Quasi's. I the set, plus 2 tires,  for $1320 shipped to my door. Kinda gives new meaning to the old saying, "Good things come, to those who wait."

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala Here's what they looked like on the previous owner's SS . The guy only had them for about 6 months when he got a deal on another set he liked better.

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala I wanted a new look, but instead of plunkin down a couple grand on a new set of rims; I opted to powder-coat the ones I had.

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala I also installed the body bushings used on the 9C1 Caprice (Cop cars) to take up the gap between the body and frame between the front & rear wheelwells.

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala Another 9C1 Caprice part here. Front air dam deflectors that help direct cooling to the brakes.

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala This bar actually comes from the Buick Roadmaster and helps reduce road noise by tying the  rear frame rails together.

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala The car has Eibach Performance Springs installed with 1/2 coil cut off of the fronts

KAMCHIEF's 1996 Chevrolet Impala I also recently switched to from Herb Adams sway bars to B-Body Performance

Kevin, Good to see your SS just keeps improving when it seems most others have dropped out or sold. The eye candy photos of the paint project are inspiring and intense. Truly "kick-ass!", first rate project. If you're ever in my area, be sure to give me a holler.John @ http://www.cardomain.com/ride/573632
