Here's my '93 SHO sporting at the time of the pics 180,000 miles...currently she's got 212,000 and still running strong. I bought it in April '05 100% stock as an ATX and soon after converted to an MTX with the help of a '92 mtx parts car and some dedicated friends. The suspension consists of Bondurant struts, Intrax springs, and alum. subframe bushings. These, along with the manual, make for a pretty fun little cruiser. Here's some pics showing the meat of the mtx swap. After the weather changes to the warmer side here in NY I'll try to get more pics up showing the wiring mods needed to run the ATX computer with the MTX trans.
The goal behind this swap was to do it with as few mtx specific parts as possible. The motor mounts were the biggest obstacle to solve and the answer came by using the top atx brackets and the bottom mtx brackets. For the front, and metal bracket was fabbed up to act as the 'middle man'to connect the upper and lower bracket. The rear involved sandwiching the two together and bolting them tight.
***NOTE: the mod made to the rear mount as shown in my pics is has the two mounts touching. I have since resolved this by grinding away some metal for clearance.
Once these mounts were made the entire 3.2 and mtx trans bolted directly to the mtx subframe. There were a few clearance issues and are shown in a few pics. Some misc. pieces used from the mtx were: rubber intake hose, lower radiator hose, upper radiator hose...I believe that was it...
For the exhaust I used piping from the mtx, and from the atx the O2 sensors and wiring. ATX manifolds will hit the firewall due to their different geometry.
MTX clutch and brake pedals are a direct bolt in. A hole needs to be cut in the floor for the shifter to come through. Clutch cable runs through an existing hole on the firewall. Throttle cable stays from the atx.
I don't have pictures to show the following mods, in time they will come. They will describe the neutral saftey switch and reverse lights hook up using mtx wiring and mating them to the atx engine harness. The cruise control is hooked up but I'm unable to check it's function due to a broken cable near the throttle body. I currently throw a check engine light as the atx computer is searching for a signal but is finding nothing since the sensors that once plugged into the atx trans are not being used. A fix for this is in the works...when the weather warms up. I have put 22,000 miles on the swap in this state and have had zero issues.
Another thing that needs to be resolved is the height of the shifter in relation to the shifter boot. The boot came from the '92 mtx parts car and replaces the rubber boot for the atx. I used super glue under the center console to secure in place. The shifter shows about 1-1.5" of metal handle.
I'm sure there is more to write about...I will continue to edit this page so please check back for updates. Now...here's a few pics.
