I recently decided to upgrade the sound system in my daily driver. Although the car came from the factory with "concert sound 2" it certainly did not sound spectacular. The stock 14 year old speakers had paper cones and tiny magnets.
A 1.5 din cassette-only player graced my dashboard, so when my portable cd/mp3 player with cassette adapter (circa 2000) finally kicked the bucket, I decided to upgrade to a better deck and speakers.
I got the deck off ebay for pretty cheap and the rest of the stuff I bought off used for a total of 300$
DECK:
Alpine CDA-9833
This is one sweet deck. I haven't had time to use all its functions but I am sure it will sound even better when all the parameters are adjusted.
Installation was done using the metra 99-4000 adapter plate. I like this plate because it has a slot that can hold a cd jewel case. I did NOT like the fact that my particular kit lined the deck up 1/4" too low and 1/8" too far to the right. I had to enlarge the holes to be able to move the deck to the appropriate location. The dash would not bolt back up without this mod. Others have reported great success with this plate.

Subs
2x Infinity S-type 10", 4 Ohm impedance, in a sealed box.
The previous owner was obviously not very meticulous because he simply screwed the amps into the box using gyprock screws, and fastened the box to his car using self-tapping screws through the box.
As a result, the box had holes in it that needed to be plugged. The subs weren't lined up in their holes well either, so the box wasn't sealed at all. It's fixed now, and the amps are no longer mounted on the box.
