This install is a re-work from the previous system ( Click Here ) and now features a full Focal system and new amps together with the previous re-work of the dash and the curved wall ( now ported ) which angles all 10 subs to the mic position . The subs are Focal 33kx's and the mids / tweeters are Focal 165k2's . The install was done at SQ Plus in Manchester , England ( SQ Plus ) . My brothers BMW Compact was also done there, which you can see at ( Click Here ) . If you have any comments / questions , please feel free to email me at andycsq@hotmail.com
The car itself is a 1985 GTI 8V of which the original roof and bonnet remain. All the other panels have been modified/replaced. It has been virtually restored to a new condition - eg. almost 1000 spent at a VW dealer on replacing every seal and rubber around the car! Other modifications include cross-drilled brakes all round, 1990 doors, DTM mirrors, Single wiper conversion, big bumper kit, 3 bar grill, original VW G60 arches, flushed tailgate, etc... It has also been resprayed in Audi RS blue. Today the engine is a 2.0 Mk III 8V engine, with full Magnex stainless steel exhaust system. But as the car weighs more than double its original weight , speed was never going to be important!
In this shot you can see the amp rack which houses 6 of the 10 Dragster DA2002 amps . There are another 4 hidden behind the rack and also 3 Audison VR 209 Evolution amps behind the rack which power the front system . The bottom 3 amps slide up under the top 3 to reveal the other amps and batteries / power distribution . The whole back section was trimmed in one ( large ) piece of Alcantara - nice job guys !! Behind the black panels are the Rockford EPX2 ( left-hand panel ) and 3 x 1 Farad caps ( right-hand panel ) which are only used for the front-end system .
The wall now houses 10 x Focal 33kx 13 inch subs . The previous subs were 12 inch diameter which meant quite a bit of work to get the new ones to fit correctly !! It's not very obvious on the pic , but the wall actually curves in a way to angle all 10 subs directly towards the mic . This was also shaped so that all the subs are exactly the same distance away from the mic . The wall is approx. 3 inches thick and is made from aluminium , MDF and fibreglass .
As you can see , the interior has been completely re-built . The dash is now symmetrical , and sweeps into the doors , and on to the sub wall . The centre console houses a JVC Kameleon CD/Tuner , Rockford RDAT , JVC widescreen monitor and all legally required instrument switches ( I do drive the car !! ) . The passenger side of the dash also houses the JVC VHS video deck .
Another view of the interior . The cover over the gearstick is removeable ( obviously !! ) , and the speedo / odometer is now in view behind the screen . This is a Stack ST500-R analogue / digital dial . The door panels have also been rebuilt and are now just over an inch thick , and made from fibreglass and MDF . The floor is now 4 inches thick , and the roof is 3 inches thick , again made from fibreglass and MDF, but also with aluminium bars for added strength .
This is a close up of the passenger footwell . In the kick panel there now sits the Focal 165k2 components , with 2 x Focal Utopia 5ws 'subs' in the centre tunnel , taking the space where the heater matrix / blowers used to be . The components were laser aligned for optimum sound quality , which explains the completely rebuilt footwell area .
A close up shot of one of the Focal Utopia 5ws 5 inch 'subs' . These are not expected to match the extension of the 8 inch subs which were in there originally, and are only sent 60 - 200 Hz.
The roof is now approximately 3 inches thick and is reinforced with aluminium bars , MDF and fibreglass . There is also a 1 inch thick MDF and fibreglass panel which covers the old sunroof opening and is held in by 46 bolts . The roof pod to the front houses all the system switch controls and the buttons for opening the doors .
When the car was being re-sprayed , a second fuel filler cap was fitted with an IP65 multiplug to allow the podium to be plugged in during SPL runs . This houses a Kenwood PS9070 CD/Tuner ( now changed to a JVC Kameleon ) together with the 2nd Rockford RDAT , and several control switches .
This is a pic of my car next to my brothers red BMW ( Click Here ) and the Lexus IS200 belonging to Phil from SQ Plus ( one of the guys who built my car ) . And the registration plates are real !!!
