djjerkass's 1979 Mercury Zephyr

December 14, 2008 update! Life has sort of gotten in the way of making much progress on the car since the '07 Car Craft Summer Nationals. A number of setbacks including 2 bad AODs, has caused some frustration as well. But the news isn't all bad. Just this fall I've gotten the transmission issues all sorted out and came to the conclusion the previously planned Cobra IRS rear would not fit. The tires would have sat right on the fender.

djjerkass's 1979 Mercury ZephyrBut, just today I finished installing the 8.8 rear complete with 5-lug/disc brake conversion. So now the wheels all actually match. How about that. All I need to do from here is plumb the new brakes, get a  custom exhaust, (with Flowmasters, of course), fix a few odd and ends and it's ready for the street! I expect to begin as soon as the weather is reasonable in the spring.

This picture is from the day it made its not-so-triumphant return to the Car Craft Summer Nationals in July 2006. I had found it there the previous year. Most parts were in place, but I found out that week that the tranny was bad. I also had not improvised a decent way to hang the Mustang fuel tank. It could drive, it just wasn't very safe. I drove it there for the 2007 and 2008 shows, with subsequent bad trannies, but at least I had more than 1st gear. Haha.

Mods in progress are:
'90 5.0L, AOD, 8.8 5-lug/disc
'01 Mustang GT front brakes
'90 Mustang dash, center console, door panels, and probably
power windows & locks

i love what you have done to your zephyr. the box top is a hard body style to come alone in the mercury brand. i don't ever see any of those body styles around here much but i love what you did to your car. keep up the good work on it and hope to see much more on it soon..

I really like your ride man! How do those Bullitts fit, they look great. Was the engine swap trickey when you installed the complete k-member back in the car? That thing will be a track monster with the IRS, and probably still ride better than stock. Good luck!
