Was in the market for a big powerful rig to tow heavy loads.

I have always been brought up on the chevy part of town, mainly because of my dad & uncle who are die hard Chevy 60's muscle.

So being brought up Chevy, I went out and bought a brand new '03 Silverado with optioned 8.0 ltr 345 hp 450 ft lbs gas motor. Most powerful and not diesel, didnt think i could deal with the smell, and noise. Also optioned it with the Allison 5 speed Heavy Duty Transmission, 4 x 4, crew cab, long bed. Lots of power but at a very poor gas milage result. The price you pay for a big motor. Needed it mainly to haul camper & tow about 3,000 lbs.

This set up was used for 2 seasons, and decided to upgrade.

Went and bougt a 28' Attitude Toybox (trailer w/rear ramp load)loaded up with 3 quads, 1 dirbike, gear & fluids puts it up to 10,000 lbs. The Chevy seemed to be able to tow relatively well. Driving cruise control set at 65 able to hold speed up hills 65 no problem but resuling @ 5 mpg.

Without towing i was averaging 10 mpg. Normal city driving. The ride was never comfortable, and out here on Southern California Freeways, the ride quality was horrible. Freeway driving resulted in rear bouncing so much you couldnt carry on a conversation.

My wife was 7 months pregnant at the time and she was really hating the ride. I looked over at her at one point and thought the baby was gonna pop out. Sooo...... we really needed a new ride, a family ride. Hum...... Vinceman's 2005 Ford Excursion

Family ride, does that mean Mini Vans ? i dont think so.... Also I needed a rig that could tow 10,000 lbs and comfort too. The search begins for a SUV... Checked out the market... 3 vehicles Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon & Ford Excursion. Suburban & Yukon were available gasoline only! ! ! Cant live with 10 city 5 towing ........ thinking I should go diesel, better milage, more power too ! !
Not only that but turns out both Suburban & Yukon are unable to tow more than 7700 lbs.

Chevrolet & GMC does not offer diesel in their big SUV. So I checked out an '05 Eddie Baur 4x4 Excursion with 6.0 ltr Powerstroke...

.... Bought it that day.... White Eddie Baur ...... 16.5 mpg hwy driving. Stock towing 10,000 lbs 9.8 mpg so far best out of 3 trips, but once again driving with cruise on and maintaining constant speed up and down hills with no problem.
