Won a K&N FIPK Kit for $152.50 last night on ebay. Had auction sniper do it for me :) Anyways, I'll be posting updates and a review as soon as it arrives and I get it installed...

K&N FIPK Kit set to arrive on Friday the 17th. After this I will probably focus on exhaust. I have not yet decided on headers, but I'm pretty sure I'll go with the Dynomax catback. I will also be retesting the Hypertech programmer with a higher octane gas. If I gain hp with the power tuning on high octane gas, it may indicate that my engine was detecting detonation during the first testing of the power tuning, and was setting back my timing, causing the power loss. This was just one of the theories presented to me as to why the tuner took power from the engine, and I plan to test them all... I'll keep this updated as I continue my testing...

I did the higher octane tests with the Hypertech. I must say I am already astonished by the results. This was in no way a scientific test since it was not nearly as controlled as my first set of tests, but the results were still crazy. These preliminary tests showed a 15 wheel horsepower increase with the 87 octane Hypertech tuning. I am running 91 octane gas. More information will be available in a future Hypertech review I will be making. These results have convinced me that my problem with the first set of tests was the engine computer detecting detonation and setting back my timing, taking away significant power. With the higher octane, there was no detonation detected, and the advanced timing increased (significantly) the hp to the wheels. What I will be doing next is a sea foam treatment on Friday to clean out the carbon buildup that (I think) is causing the engine to detonate with the advanced timing using 87 octane gas. I will then run a new series of tests with 87 octane and see if I still get the power increase. If not, I will try something else. I really do not want to run 91 octane forever (a bit expensive), so I'd like to find out why I'm not getting the full benefit of the 87 octane tuning while actually using 87 octane gas... Anyways I'll be keeping you posted on this and will also be writing a review on the K&N FIPK when it comes on Friday... Peace...

New updates on the Hypertech: last night I tested the hypertech in the quarter mile with the power tuning and got low 18's. It was a significant drop from stock. Needless to say, I was pretty upset, but I decided to test it out again today. I got low 17's, getting my new best time of 17.17 @ 80.6 MPH. I began wondering how this could be and then I realized it... The tuning must need some time to "set". I've been doing back to back testing taking the programming in and out to see differences, but the programming is never really setting. Today I set the power tuning, and let the car sit for an hour. Then I took it out and did the runs and I was amazed at the difference... Anyways I'm doing a seafoam treatment tomorrow, changing to synthetic oil, and installing my K&N FIPK kit. Here's hoping everything goes well... Hey if I'm lucky maybe by this time tomorrow I'll have broken into the high 16's... Wouldn't that be nice...

Well I got my K&N FIPK and put it in, so far so good. It sounds really great and I can actually feel a power increase this time. It just finished raining so I haven't had time to run it in the 1/4 mile to see the difference, but I think I might break into the 16s with my current setup. At the bottom of the page I now have my review of the Sea Foam and I updated the Hypertech review to reflect my new data.

Today I put in my Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil with an AC Delco oil filter. Have yet to G-Tech the FIPK kit, will keep you posted...

Bought a bunch of crap today. Got a Dynomax Super Turbo Catback exhaust, a high flow throttle blade, and a March Underdrive Pulley set. Hopefully this will all get here before racing at Famoso on Saturday the 25th (next Saturday), which I'm still not 100% sure I'll go to yet... I still have yet to G-Tech the K&N FIPK kit because of the rain, but I should be able to some time tomorrow hopefully. I'm hoping these upgrades all together will take me down into the low 16s. That would be great. Anyways, I updated page 2 with my current upgrades and my upgrades in the mail, with links to where to get them. This could be useful if you're like me and just want people to tell them what and where to get things. Honestly, I link out to Summit Racing for the K&N Kit and the Hypertech, but they are way overpriced for those items. You should be able to get them both on ebay for around $150... That's what I got mine for... But the price for the catback exhaust and the pulleys was reasonable...

It's official! I'll be running my Blazer in the 1/4 mile next Saturday at Famoso. Now I just need to get these companies to send my parts before then... Stupid holiday... I also tested my K&N FIPK Kit today and got some really great results... You can check out my review on it at the bottom to see the performance difference I measured...

My parts are here!!! I got my Dynomax SuperTurbo catback exhaust and March pulley set today from SummitRacing.com. Man they got it here fast (1 day). Well, tonight I had the opportunity to install the catback exhaust and from my little test drive I can already tell I'll have some improvement (don't want to jinx it though). It also sounds really good. It's a deep, mellow sound, but doesn't drone on like some exhausts. From inside the truck it sounds almost 100% stock, which is what I wanted. High flow without the drone. Tomorrow I'll hopefully be able to get some times with the new exhaust, and also get my pulleys in without too much hassle...

Well, today I had a minor setback. And when I say minor, I mean I wasted $150 on the Dynomax exhaust. Absolute piece of junk. I went from a 16.5 sec 1/4 mile to a 18.0 sec 1/4 mile. This was a 4-hour install that required buying new bolts at Lowes, cost $150, and lost me, I would estimate, around 20-30 ft-lbs. of low-end torque. I maybe gained 2 hp on the top end. Nevertheless, the low-end losses made my overall 1/4 mile time significantly slower. You can read my full review on page 7.
On top of that, it appears that I will need air tools to get off my stock alternator and crank pulleys to put on the new March pulleys. After 2 hours of my friend and I busting our knuckles, we decided to call it a day. I will be going to see my old high school auto shop teacher on Friday, who will hopefully be able to help me get them off (he has air tools, so it shouldn't be that hard), and get the new ones on. I will also be taking off the new exhaust while I'm there. Day could've been better...

Today I went to Mr. January's class to put on my underdrive pullies and re-install my stock exhaust. Unfortunately, Mr. J disapproved of my new pullies saying they wouldn't improve performance, would have trouble keeping charge, and would make my A/C run bad. I didn't want to argue, and it seemed as though he wasn't going to let me use his tools to do it, so I didn't push the subject much further.
Because I cannot install the pullies, I sent them back to Summitracing for a refund and returned the new belt to Kragen. I did, however, get off my new exhaust and put back on the stock one. It feels 100% better already.
After getting home I cleaned the MAF sensor again and did yet another seafoam cleaning on the engine. I also took out all the seats (except the driver's seat) and the spare tire. Hopefully these little things will make the difference on my runs tomorrow...

Went to Famoso Raceway today for an open test and tune. It was awesome! Even though I had one of the slowest (or THE slowest) cars there, that didn't stop me from having a good time. My fastest 1/4 mile time was 16.456 @ 81.50 MPH. This time is with only the Hypertech 87 octane tuning, 5600 RPM shift points with increased firmness, and the K&N FIPK Kit. I was also running 91 octane gas. All in all, I had a great day and would love to do it again.
However, while there, I came to a realization: my car cost me $15,000 and only has 25,000 miles on it, and some of these cars are half that running sub-14 second 1/4 times. This got me thinking: is there any way I could use the Blazer as a daily driver and find another car that is 1)cheap and 2)fast? The answer: maybe. As of now my parents dislike the idea of having a 5th car hanging around the neighborhood. So my dilemma is this: I must first find a place to store and work on the car, and then find a car to do so. Finding the car shouldn't be too bad, as I'm pretty well set on a '87 - '92 Mustang 5.0, and they can be found in good (running) condition for below $2000. A complete rebuild kit for these cars goes for $250-$400. The engine would be completely overhauled with every concievable tune up option. I would take off the following: all belt-driven accessories except the alternator (which will be on a switch). I will be running an electric water pump and electric fan. All plastic, carpet, and seats (save the driver seat) will be removed for weight reduction. Everything will be lain bare, will relocate the battery, and buy slicks and gears. Rearend will be the first to be reinforced. I should be running around 250 crank HP with 325 ft.-lbs of torque on a car that gets perfect traction (on slicks) and weighs approximately 2700 lbs. This would all be for around $3000 on a car that would run an (estimated) 14.30 second quarter mile. THEN I would do some upgrades. :)
