UK Stainless Steel Exhaust Installation
The stock exhaust system that came with the DeLorean left much to be desired. Not only was it extremely restrictive, but it utilized a crossover pipe that was routed on top of the transmission, making it very difficult to reach the clutch slave cylinder when the system needed to be bled.
A small company in England manufactures exhaust systems for very high-end cars, such as the Ferrari 360. Apparently there was enough of a demand for them to design something new for the DeLorean, and the system pictured below is what I ended up getting. Removing the old exhaust proved to be a challenge, and some of the original exhaust studs needed to be torched in order to break free from the engine block. Below is a shot of the torch in action:
My old exhaust components started piling up on the floor, and ended up going into an extremely rare right-hand drive DeLorean in Ireland (one of approx. 25 right hand drive models produced).
After replacing the exhaust studs and installing new stainless gaskets, the new stainless headers bolted right on:
The installation of what remained of the exhaust took about two hours. After finishing up the project, it was time to step back and admire how much better the rear end of the car looked.
For the first time in its life, the car actually sounds like a true sportscar. It has a beautiful european sound to it, and when de-accelerating it lets off a great bubbling noise. I'm not sure what the gained horsepower is, but I've read that this system gives approximately 20 horsepower over stock. From the seat-of-the-pants feel, the car is definitely peppier.
