Fan Sequencer Installation

Many of you have probably heard of electrical gremlins in the DeLorean. This is somewhat true, but the cooling fan circuit causes the most headaches. DeLorean originally used a blue Pektron relay that would control the cycling of the cooling fans when the A/C was turned on. Unfortunately, many of these were defective and they often melted, causing the cooling fans to permanently remain off and the engine to overheat. Many different options are available today to correct this problem, ranging from a 3 pronged fused jumper in the relay socket, to a microprocessor based module that individually cycles the fans. I opted to go the later route. I ordered mine from PJGrady.com

The module is fairly small, roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes. The picture below was borrowed from Alistair in Ireland, as I didn't have time to go tear into my car to get a picture.

With this module, the microprocessor sequences each cooling fan individually. Before, turning on the A/C would immediately kick on the interior blower motor, both cooling fans, and the A/C compressor. Having all of these kick on at the same second would cause a HUGE voltage drop when idling, almost stalling the car. It was also a large strain on the alternator and the entire electrical system.

Now that each cooling fan is staggered 5 seconds from one another, the voltage gauge hardly moves when turning on the A/C. It really makes it feel like driving a different car! The fans also stagger themselves when they turn off. All in all, this module is definitely worth the somewhat high pricetag, plus I get to tell people that I have a microprocessor running the cooling fans in my 25 year old car. :)
