July 10th, 2007 a small tornado touched down and left a bit of damage in its wake. Since I don't have a garage, the car is kept under a cover alongside the house. The wind blew the cover completely off the car to the end of the yard, and breaking both mirrors off. It also ripped limbs from the neighbor's tree and landing on the now uncovered car. The majority of the damage was done to the roof, denting it in beyond repair and breaking the tracks for the moon roof. The roof actually rippled all the way to the door frame and weather stripping. Limbs also dented the rear corner of the car, breaking the tail light and leaving dents and scratches all along the driver's side. The pictures don't really do a good job showing the damage. They were taken as soon as we got home.
Some of the tree that was on the car
The cover that we brought up from the end of the yard
Drivers side mirror ripped off
Passenger side hanging on by the wires
Hard to see, but the taillight lens was busted and the clip holding it in was busted
The dent on the rear corner
Hard to see just how badly the roof was dented
After all was said and done, the damages reached almost $6,000. The roof was completely replaced, moon roof replaced, both mirrors replaced, driver's side replaced and the entire side was re-painted.
A lousy camera phone pic. Its the only pic that I have during the repairs. My work schedule kept me from visiting while the shop was open.
A pic a friend took the same day I took one. This was after the new roof was installed and the side repainted. The bumpers and mirrors are baking when this was taken.
The biggest problem that was encountered was the shop that did the original graphics no longer works with domed vinyl, so for the time being its with out graphics on it. The best thing that cam out of it was fixing one of Chrysler's biggest design flaws. In 2001 - 2003 model years, they used black rubber bumpers and lined them with tape to protect the paint during assembly. After years spent in sunlight, the areas where the tape was applied, faded leaving the infamous "tape marks". I had the shop paint the bumpers and mirrors to match the rest of the car. Now it no longer has any black trim.
Here are the after pics. THe first 3 are at home and the last one is from the first show with the new look.
