The original 10 1/2" front disks and rear drums of the 87 V6 aren't going to be good enough. I already installed a fourth gen spec Moser rear axle and swapped over the 11 1/2" rear disk from the 95 donor so big brakes were needed for the front. I recently found out how easy it is to swap to C5 Corvette 13" brakes and began scrounging used bits immeadiatly.
Stock
The stock brake rotor/bearing hub is cut down to become just a bearing hub that will accept the C5 rotor hats. A metal grinding cut off wheel is used first to roughly chop away the brake disk. The remaing hub cut is then trued up on a lathe and the front face outer edge is notched a 1/4" (6mm) to clear a step in the new rotor hat so it will sit flat on the bolt face. Longer Dorman 610-323 wheel studs are fitted to make up the thickness of the C5 rotor.
For the caliper mounting to the spindle, the two rearmost dust shield bolt holes are drilled and tapped to accept much larger M12 bolts. A dog bone shaped 1/2" thick adapter bracket is fabricated to bolt into these holes and then have the C5 caliper brackets (abutments) bolted to them to properly position the C5 caliper on the rotor. The antlers that previously supported the stock calipers must be cut away to clear the new removable caliper bracket and M14 bolts. The trick is to remove the minimum necessary to clear the heads of M14 caliper bracket bolts to maintain the strength of the spindle around the adapter holes.
Now I just need to find some good used 1997-2008 base Corvette front calipers and I'll the brakes to go with all my drivetrain and chassis upgrades.
