VIR AUTOX/Time Trials Feb 18th
today was my first autox/track day. only past experience was some karting and a mazda rev it up. what was to be an autox event on a road course on the VIR Patriot course with cones turned into time trials on an open course. complete with snow falling and a nice wet & cold course. my heat started at 2:30.
got there around 1 to register and have car go thru tech. novice class around 2 - i was the only one in it. only advice since it was sprinkling/cold (high of 38) was dont be a hero. ha.
getting ready to line up for heat
lined up and waiting
at this time the ambulance and tow truck passed me. someone ran off the end of the 2nd straight in a volvo.
first run
coming down to finish line. 2nd straight ends after a blind hill crest - took it easy on straight but pushed a to much on last off camber turn and back end got a little loose but kept it on course. yeah first track lap done....
switch off to cousin. his car is being worked on, his wifes car blew the alternator the night before.
well watched another car go sliding off course near finish line before going into 2nd run. 2nd run went faster...pushed each turn - kept last off camber turn under control. while waiting for next run a honda blew past the finish line and went out of control in front of the pit area and hit the wall. i was standing near the wall and had to duck and run to avoid flying foam and glass. looked like i had dandruff after the foam settled. no one was hurt.
big chunks and lots of flurries of foam up and over wall
some race coordinators not looking happy
heat declared over - total of 2 runs.... :(
