oldboats's 1973 Lincoln Mark IV

This is my baby, my 1973 Lincoln Continental Mark IV.
This picture was when I bought it, I was sixteen.
This car was purchased from a man who no longer drove because he had lost his leg.

This picture was taken after I had the car for about a year. It was raining that night and there was a new dealership to spin cookies at.

This is the car after I had it for a few months. It is parked outside of my former place of employment.

So, now I suppose you want to know what has been done to it? Not much, honestly. I have had very few mechanical problems to fix, it has been very reliable for me. The brake master cylinder went out after about a year or so, cheap and easy. It did not have a vacuum choke pull-off when I got it, now it does. It had one caliper lock up and it was replaced. Lately (2007) it has been acting weird under braking and I think that the rear seals may be leaking, if so I am doing an axle swap for disc brake conversion from a later (1976) Mark IV I parted out a while ago. Other than that it has been trouble free. It was a 460 4V, C6, and 9" limited slip to begin with, although it will be built up once I get a little money together.
Modifications include:
The previous owner gave it dual exhuast with an unknown brand of turbo mufflers. I wish I knew who made them because they sound great and I would buy them for some of my other cars.
Factory forged aluminium "deep dish" road wheels (had hub caps when I bought it).
I have found that there was just barely enough room to fit a set of 255-70R15 tires (no rubbing!). Stock size was 225-75R15. I put on four Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires circa summer 2005. HERE'S AN UPDATE ON THOSE TIRES (2006)! Okay, I was looking again at the clearance of them the other day and they do in fact rub. They rub the frame at the back of the front tires when the wheels are turned to lock. It only rubs the frame and does not seem to hurt anything, so they will stay on there. Neither the tires nor the frame is being hurt, it just rubs that part of the frame clean.
The front swaybar end links were replaced and the bushings were all upgraded to polyurethane ones.
Rear springs were replaced with ones from a 1977 Town Car, this raised the back of the car about 1.5-2 inches, putting it from barely perceptable taildragger to slightly raked.
The stock eight-track radio was retained so as to not mar up the look of the dash. I have taken it and added a four-channel Boss amplifier, Xtreme Sound MP3 10-disc changer, JBL 2 way front 5.25 speakers, and Pioneer (pre-Wal-mart) four way six by nines in the rear deck. I have been asked before if I had ten inch subs, and my uncle referred to the stereo as a "weapon". All of this is completely undetectable from the outside of the vehicle, assuming the sound is off. UPDATE ON THE STEREO (2007) I have a friend who attended tertiary schooling for electronics and I have left him in charge of a redesign of the factory stereo. I had problems with the common ground stereo for years and finally have asked him to turn the stock stereo into basically a remote volume control, tuner, and auxiliary input. It will act as a pre-amplifier only and hopefully alleviate all my issues. (Fingers crossed and waiting!)

STEREO - Update October 2007 - I went over to my friend's house the other day and we tore into the stereo a bit. I was rather surprised to find out that the stereo was built in sections, much like a computer. I believe that these head units were made for Ford by Motorola. I have tried to figure out what the model is and been thus far unsuccessful. I have been contacting several old car stereo schematic shops and so far none have been able to help. I must forge on and find one somewhere, anywhere.

STEREO - Update December 2008 - I have looked into the stereo further and further and now effectively given up on the idea of modifying it. Instead I will be swapping it out for an identical appearing dummy faceplate that is just some switches and knobs running a computer built into the car for a jukebox function. I also plan on changing out the idiot light panel in exchange for a screen and making a cover for it that will make it appear "stock". We'll have to see how things go...

Most of the things I have done to the car have been simply because I wanted to, not out of necessity.

Oh, and another shot of my car, along with my friend's Monte Carlo.
