I swapped both axles in February of 2008.
My rear axles splines were badly worn, my shoes were shot, a wheel cylinder was beginning to leak, and it was noisy because of a bad rear differential carrier bearing. To make matters worse, the e-brake did not work properly if at all.
Time for an upgrade!
What I had: rear C200 with NISMO LSD, 4.38 gears, drum brakes
Front R180A, open, 4.38 gears
What I got: rear H233B with factory LSD, 4.6 gears, disc brakes
Front: R200A with (formerly in my C200) NISMO LSD, 4.6 gears
Since the Pathfinder uses coil springs and a four-link suspension, I had to cut off all of the brackets.
I installed the axle with leaf spring perches that I made myself. That allowed me to move the axle back 3/4" and set the pinion angle. Once everything was in alighnment, the perches were welded.
I also used this as an opportunity to do a U-bolt flip and to relocate the lower shock mounts. Now, nothing hangs below the axle.
Replacing an R180 with an R200 requires some clearancing. I ground away part of the cast gusset where it would interfere with the oil pan. The other clearance issue was already solved by an earlier change; the left engine mount is shimmed 3/8".
I decided to paint the cap white.
The Pathy e-brakes cannot be routed the same in the HB, so I made lemonade out of lemons by adding a handle and splitting the e-brakes. This will control a free-spinning wheel and act similar to a locker.
