Rear Bumper Fabrication 5/20/06
My bumper design allows at least 8" more vertical clearance than stock. It is stronger in all directions, will carry approximately 100 lbs more tongue load and strengthens the rear of the frame side to side. The additional strength is needed because the receiver tube has to bear the load of my receiver-mounted 8,000 lb winch.
It is tucked in as far as possible while still providing full lens protection from tree trunks. The rear corners were notched and reflanged to create a pocket for the new bumper's ends. That gave me the clearance that I was after without the bumper hanging out and catching on things.
The tube forming was mainly done for appearance, but also adds a strength factor.
I went with a fabricated license bracket that is sprung in two directions and illuminated per DOT standards.
The Dupli-Color Bumper Color paint is easily touched-up.
Two rods that bridge the outer and inner tubes serve as no-snag safety chain "loops".
