Here it is. My 89 Plymouth Colt. Engine wise it is completely stock right now but that will change soon. I have a 94 Plymouth Laser RS turbo as a donor car for my 4G63T swap. Suspension wise I have added a set of KYB GR-2 struts (F&R) and AWD DSM OEM springs. The fronts had to be cut a little but they are much thicker than the OEM Colt springs and make it look and handle much better.
Here are the seats I put in. They are from my donor car (94 Plymouth Laser RS turbo). I had to make some custom brackets as the seats don't mount exactly the same. I think it turned out pretty good.
Here is a pic of the car when I first got it. Stock suspension and wheels. Reminds me of a jack rabbit for some reason.
A pic of the donor car. I picked this up locally for $450 with a broke timing belt. Currently the engine has been pulled, torn down and sent to the machine shop to be baked, washed and honed. New bearings and rings are going in. The crank has been polished also. Balance shafts are being removed. I'll try to get some pics of the engine sometime.
The wheels are Primax 767's I believe. Got them used on Ebay. They were hyper silver but I sanded them and painted them with Eastwood's semi-gloss wheel paint. It's very durable and about $10 a can. I think they look sweet with the red exterior. Tires are Hankook 205/50/15
Here are a few engine pics as promised. It's a 4G63T from a 94 Plymouth Laser RS turbo. It's been cleaned, honed and painted. It's a beautiful red but the lighting makes it look orange. Still waiting on rod/main bearings from Mitsubishi before it all goes back together. 7 bolts are a PITA also because each journal has a different size bearing.
Rear of the block with Hyundai Elantra (92-95) rear mount. Looks just like the DSM engine mount except it's a little shorter.
Here are some pics of my axles from Carquest. Also shown is an intermediate shaft from an AWD DSM. That's right, equal length halfshafts!!!
Timing belt engine mount from a Hyundai Elantra (92-95). It's been beadblasted and painted. DSM engine mount on the bottom for comparison. Look closely and you'll see the slight differences.
Another Hyundai mount, the top one goes on the frame itself. The lower one is an original Mirage Turbo mount. I couldn't find any 5 speed Elantra's in the junkyard with the tranny still in them so I had to purchase it new. This one actually attaches directly to the tranny with two bolts. Just a few more parts to gather and I'll be ready for the 4G63 swap. I can't wait!
Autobody class is starting to pay off. I have the hood and fenders primed and ready for paint. Had alot of small dings to take out and also shaved the antenna hole.I'm not putting a radio back in after the swap. Guages and an electronic boost controller will be going in it's place. I'm debating on changing the color of the car to black or silver but I'll probably just respray it red. Who knows?
Been doing a little more body work. It should get repainted in the next few weeks. I've finally decided on black for sure.
IT'S FINALLY PAINTED!!! That's right, after sanding, sanding and more sanding all my hard work has paid off.
Here is a view from the rear. I can't wait until the 3" exhaust goes in.
Took the time to repaint the doorjambs also.
Got the head back from the machine shop. Many valves were replaced due to the timing belt slipping on the Laser and smacking them against the pistons. Head was shaved and all new seals went in. I also put in some new revised lifters with the 3mm orifices, these are not suppose to tick like the older 1g lifters.
The intake manifold was completely stripped and degreased, then I used my pressure washer to clean it inside and out. One tip here is to go to the dollar store and buy a few cans of off brand oven cleaner in the aerosol can. Spray the manifold inside and out and let it sit about 30 minutes. I then pressure washed it (this gets very messy, wear old clothes) and dried it with compressed air. I then taped off the square and painted the "ECI Multi" red and let it dry. Once that was dry I sanded/polished the square around it and taped it off to paint the rest of the manifold metallic silver. Be sure to tape off everywhere a gasket goes (throttle body, IM to head, EGR) to make sure it seals properly and doesn't get in the IM. I then taped outside the polished square and clearcoted this part to keep it shiny. I used Pactra's paint, it's actually made for lexan RC car bodies and it's available at most Hobby Shops. It's heat/fuel resistant and very durable. About $3.50 a can but the can is only about 4" tall. I highly recommend it.
Lastly the valvecover was taken from a 91 Galant GS from the boneyard. It has "Mitsubishi" on it instead of the normal "16 Valve" that the DSM covers have. It too was stripped/pressure washed and painted with high temp engine primer from Napa. Then pactra outlaw black was sprayed on. I then gave it a few days to fully cure. Taped off the surrounding areas and sanded/polished the raised letters. Then sprayed Duplicolors high temp engine clear on it to protect it. It's alot of work but well worth it in my book. The spark plug cover is made by RTM Racing, they do top quality work.
Cleaned and repainted the fuel rail and FPR. RC 550cc injectors also went in along with new injector seals.
Here is a harness that I fabbed up. In order to swap the 4G63T into an 89-92 Colt,Summit or Mirage NT you have to use a turbo DSM engine wiring harness. This has to be mated to the Colt's interior harness for all the lights and guages to work. Check out www.4G63T.com or www.Lilevo.com for more info here. I basicly snipped the connectors from the Laser's interior harness and the Colt's engine harness and soldered them together and heatshrinked them. This should make it basicly a "Plug and Play" deal on most of the wiring once the 4G63 is in the Colt. There are still a few wires that will have to be ran for other things (MPI relay, fuel pump ect). More on that once the swap is actually completed though.
Here is my Evo III 16g that I robbed from my 92 TSi. I also took the 3" GM mas, Maf-t setup, 550cc injectors and Greddy Profec spec B EBC. All of these will go on the Colt and I put the Laser's 450's and 14b on the Talon.
Been doing a few interior upgrades lately. First off I was able to get a hold of a turbo 3 spoke wheel and tilt steering column so I ditched the DSM wheel I was using.
I also found a cluster from a Canadian car with a tach. NT Colts come with a cheesy cluster that just shows mph, temp and fuel. This unit just swaps right in and works perfectly and looks much better. Plus I'll have a tach ready for the 4G63 when it goes in. I'm not much on the giant aftermarket tachs so I'm glad I found this one. I also swapped in my odometer to keep the mileage correct on my car.
Got rid of the long shifter by taking it out, cutting it and MIG welding it back together. I also put a leather 2g DSM shift knob on and got rid of the cheap OEM rubber one.
Found a nice set of original Turbo Colt/Mirage seats. These things sit great and look awesome compared to the Laser seats I was using.
The bottom end of the engine is back together with all new rings and bearings from Mitsubishi. Everything was plastiguaged and checked by yours truly and is within factory specs. ARP's were used to hold the head on and a copper-sprayed OEM gasket was used to seal things up.
As you can see alot of cleaning, painting and polishing was done on this engine. I am a firm believer of doing things once and doing them right the first time.
Here is a shot of the timing belt side. The balance shafts were eliminated to save weight, make more power and make the engine more reliable. The balance shaft belt can break and get tangled in the timing belt and make the valves smack the pistons. I am waiting on a crank spacer from Mitsubishi before the timing belt can go on. It eliminates the large balance shaft belt sprocket.
A few more pics
The turbo is finally on. I picked up a stock 2g exhaust manifold from a fellow DSM'er for $50. Beadblasted all the rust off and repainted it with Eastwood's cast manifold paint. This is the only paint that I have found that can stand up to the heat from turbo cars. I did the same thing for my 1g O2 housing and then ported both of them.
I also added a new 2g heat shield and OEM O2 sensor.
A few more engine/turbo pics.
Timing belt, t-belt cover, all new tensioners and crank pulley on. Only one drive belt to worry about, no AC or power steering going on. My t-belt cover was cracked when I got the car so I decided to trim it evenly and just use the bottom half. This should keep the moisture out and it still lets me set my ignition timing.
I also modified the AC mount. As some of you know the DSM intermediate shaft mounts to the back of the block but uses the lower "ear" of the AC bracket to give it the correct spacing. I chose to just trim that ear off and use it like a washer. This way I still retain the correct geometry and lose the extra weight of that heavy steel bracket.
92-95 Hyundai Elantra brake booster, M/C and proportion valve. These parts are much larger than the stock Colt stuff and bolt right in with just a little bending of the hard brake lines.
The 1.5 is out, everything was removed from the engine bay and it was degreased and pressure washed. I then scuffed it and painted it black to match the exterior. DSM wiring harness is in and the 4G63 will be dropped in shortly.
Engine is in the car, I/C pipes are all fabbed up and it is finally running.
Brackets for the half size civic radiator
Upper intercooler bracket
My custom exhaust, 2.5" mandrel bent tubing to a 2.5"-3" reducer and then a 3" stainless flex pipe. 3" from there to a stainless supertrapp. It's loud but flows very good and sounds nice.
A shot of the front with the bumper cover trimmed to fit the I/C.
This thing is awesome. Something about a 2300lb. car with 300 horses. 1st and 2nd gears are crazy and almost useless. Not many cars will chirp the tires in 5th.
I pulled all the calipers from the 94 Laser and disassembled them, beadblasted and repainted them using the same Pactra Racing Red that I used on the engine block. I then clearcoated them with high temp engine paint and completely rebuilt them with all new seals and O-rings. I'm getting some slotted, zinc coated rotors also. 91 Galant GS discs for the rear and 92-95 Hyundai Elantra vented rotors for the front. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that I can make all this stuff work together. I already have the rear hubs for the 91 Galant GS. These cars actually came with rear discs and they share the Colt's 4x114.3 bolt pattern. Once the Colt is repainted I'll tackle the brake swap. Here are some before and after pics.
Finally received my new rotors. I got them slotted and gold zinc plated to prevent rust.
Here you can see the difference between the elantra/galant rotors and the rotors removed from the 94 Laser. They are almost identical in size so they should work.
I will be using the rear hubs from the 91 Galant GS, the stub axle is larger on the Galant so I'll have to modify this Laser rear beam to fit the Colt. This should be fun.
Front brakes are on. Replaced the lower ball joints, outer tie-rod ends and all wheel bearings/seals while I was at it. I think they look pretty good.
Before shot.
Here you can see the difference between the stock Colt front brakes and the 92-95 Hyundai Elantra discs. There is also a big difference in the pads since I am using turbo FWD DSM calipers.

A few more
Found someone on www.4G61T.org parting an original turbo Colt and quickly grabbed the rear disc setup from it. Luckily the Galant GS and turbo Colt share the same rear rotors. Looks like I didn't have to use the Laser's rear axle beam after all. Everything was a bolt on deal. Stainless lines from RRE also went on all four corners.
Windows have also been tinted along with the fr/rr disc conversion.
Here is the 94 Laser tranny. I had to swap the diff to the early style. 92.5 and up fwd dsm's used a larger axle spline. The Mirage turbo axles have the same splines as the early fwd's so I swapped in a 91 diff. I then cleaned it and repainted it.
Laser tranny is ready to go in. The N/T colt shift levers were removed and put on this tranny. Also the cable mount, Mirage turbo tranny mount and axle seals are in.
New shift lever, fulcrum ball, Mitsubishi plastic sleeved throw-out bearing and clip installed. The fulcrum ball was also moved out 1mm by using a stainless washer behind it. This is supposed to help according to TRE.
A few pics of past DSM's. The first one is my 92 Galant VR-4. For those that don't know this is basicly a turbo AWD eclipse with a sedan "sleeper" body. Only a handful of these were ever sent over here to the US. I really should have kept it but oh well.
My old 94 FWD turbo talon
My old 92 GSX, rare 6 bolt 4 bolt combo. Only 80k on it too.
My wife's old 99 GS-T
My old 98 GS-T
My ultra rare 90 Galant GSX, it's AWD with a 4G63 non turbo engine. I believe even less of these were imported than Galant VR-4's
Another 6 bolt 4 bolt 92 GSX
My recent daily driver, a 92 AWD Eagle Talon TSi (6 bolt,4 bolt).
Update: SOLD 02/16/06As you can tell I like DSM's for some reason. After having so many though I tend to get bored with them, hence my reason for tackling the turbo Colt swap. By far this has been my best project, probably cheapest too!
Update!!! Sold the Colt back in October of 2006. I hated to see it go but I recently got my Dealer's License and started selling used cars (imagine that LOL). It went to a lucky die-hard DSMer and he is very cool. It's a garage kept weekend warrior that I will truly miss. Stay tuned for my next project, once my wallet allows. I'm currently looking for a 93-96 Mirage Sedan for a 4G63T swap. Of course it'll be getting the Evo III body kit and all.
