jmurphz33's 1978 Datsun 280Z

UPDATE: 6/30/06
Alright, things have once again slowed down... and I'm starting to get back to modifying the car. Recently installed the little Alpine T220 amp, so my "Type-R" Alpine components are amped... it's no sub, but it does the job just fine.
Now I'm starting to get antzy about getting to performance---- I've been searching everywhere to find a good deal on suspension... either going with Ground Control coilovers, Tokico, or a race setup from MSA. At around the same time, looking to get MSA strut bars (hopefully cusco for the front), and sway bars... to match the 15X7 Konig's I've been longing for.
As for my motoring dilemma... I have a L28ET head that I'm gonna get shaved a little, and ported-- it's a P90 turbo head so it'll flow a lot better than my N42. Probably use my spare shortblock and put in forgings if I can find the money. This is temporary until I decide for turbo or not, though...

Interior:
-New molded carpet (black)
-Molded dash cap from MSA
-Replacement center console from Courtesy Z
-Alpine CDA9847 MP3 Deck, Alpine TypeR Components, amped with Alpine MRP-t220
-RAZO shift knob w/ black leather boot
-MOMO hub adapter, MK1 steering wheel
-----Future plans: Different steering wheel, probably a plain black Momo. Corbeau or Bride seats with harnesses. Rear strut bar, short shifter.
Performance:
-Stock L28 w/ polished valve cover
-Custom CAI w/ K&N filter
-New OEM Master cylinder/vacuum booster
Future plans: Wow. Lots to say here. Probably make this an L31 stroker boosted with nitrous, or make it a turbocharged L28 with forged internals.... not sure what to choose. Looking for a Nismo or MSA header, and possibly a Blitz intake setup. For exhaust I want to go with Magnaflow, or figure out how to make an A'Pexi or Blitz fit. Also with suspension, want about a 2" drop with the coilovers, and adjustable camber. Basically I want this thing to kill.
Exterior:
-New headlights, HID.
-That is IT.
Future plans: Many. I want to have the Z repainted in a silver of some sort, with all Fairlady badging... the early 240Z bumpers, possibly ZG flares---- and carbon accents--- maybe hood, but definitely front spoiler and rear hatch spoiler/lip.
All that's holding me back is the $$$...

First Post- 10/05I just bought this 1978 Datsun 280Z from a guy in Texas about a month ago-- on ebay... I should say it was a pain in the ass because the guy wasn't really straightforward with anything in regards to the condition of the vehicle he advertised. I've just recently got the Z to the condition it was advertised as. But hey... win some, lose some.

Engine plans: I'm stuck between three ideas, and all of them are real options for me. In the shop, I have a 60K L28 motor ready to build up and swap in, and an L28ET from an 83 ZXT (and everything for the turbo swap)----or I could build the internals and turbo the L28. I'm really stuck between what to do, because I've always wanted a turbo car....

Exterior: Really having a tough time with deciding what to do. Obviously---those protruding HUGE stock bumpers have gotta go, but I'm not sure whether I want to get the small JDM bumpers to replace them, aftermarket carbon fiber bumpers, or just go with a nice carbon front spoiler. I'm leaning towards the first two, because then it can be lowered more, which is always good. But, I'm undecided--- we'll see. Another obvious is the paint color-- which needs to change. I'm not sure what color to repaint, but I'm thinking like an Arctic Silver kind of a gunmetal grey? Who knows.

>Update-- 4/3/06: Well, things are very slowly starting to move along with my car. Just recently, the heater control valve started leaking coolant into my interior...not cool! So I replaced everything necessary, while at the same time revamping my interior. Before I did anything else, I gutted all of the A/C components---- don't really have a need for it, plus it helps to shed a tiny bit of weight, and lessens a little parasitic loss. I bought a full face dash cover, Momo hub adapter to fit my new wheel, Razo knob, leather shift boot, new center console, Alpine MP3 deck, and black molded carpet. Makes it look a lot cleaner inside, especially with the uncracked dash.

Sweet ride fella! Skip the drifting,..it's a waste of good rubber. Tighten up the suspension and steering with polyurethane for better lateral g's and handling. Cool the fresh atmosphere that Nismo breathes, spin the turbine up to max rpm to generate some boost pressure, and feeeel the power push you back in your seat!! GT500murph
