Another fun day in the garage. I managed to cut out and replace the two inner fender assemblies on the car. The following pics show some details of the job.
In the imortal words of Scarface "Meet mey little friend!". The sawSall is my new best friend for removing bits of metal. Fast brutal and efficient!!
It helps if you start to cut large chunks out of the middle. This will make room for spot weld removal and grinding.
Did I mention spot welds? The support for this assembly has more than its fair share of the things. Not sure why so many are required, but it was fun to cut out all of them. Note how the rust is there even though the shell was acid dipped.
Original welds in this area are tricky to clean-up. Creative use of the grinder and patience will do the job
Worked on the front frame section today. It was quite easy compared to the rest of the things I have dome. Here are some pics:
This is what we started with
Today was a big day. After a lot of practice with the TIG welder, I decided it was time to do some real welding on the car. The area in question is the frame horns that support the rad and the front of the bonnet. The welding is mostly inside corner stuff; this has got to be the hardest weld to do with a TIG
I am reasonably happy with the results. Still not to the stage where the welds are what I would call "Pretty"
JUly 15/06. Managed to swallow another chunk of the elephant today! The front frame horns are finished and the front crossmember is installed. All welding finished exept for what I will do when the car is flipped over. The rad uprights needed to be adjusted with a hammer to compensate for some closing-up while welding. I should have placed the rad in place while welding. All in all, a good day!
