Stage 3: Gen 3 Viper Brakes
I have 2003 Viper Calipers, a rotor, and an extra Durango spindle.
Here is a picture of some factory calipers. Mine are Gunmetal grey instead.
The rotor fit perfectly on the spindle once I cut off the ears that supported the original brake pads.
Here is a close-up of the severed ears! Those ears went over the factory rotor for the brake pads to float on.
Here is a backside view of the spindle with the rotor and caliper. As you can see a little more trimming will be needed on the original mounts. I will also need to have some mounts fabricated for the caliper.
Spindle is back from the fab shop only problem now is that it won't fit behind my rims. Now I need a spacer! Won't need much will have to measure it out. Time to break out the digital calipers......Update - won't fit the rim is too small (only 17") for the 14" rotor. Time to move up to 20's or step down to the 13" Viper rotors! Then the spacer will be all I need to hook these baby's up and have the caliper clear the rim.
Viper Caliper Comparison
Considerable difference in the size comparing the 1st and 2nd Generations and the 3rd
Rear brake upgrade
Found a site that sells conversion kits for the Dakota/Durango's. Sidewindercustoms I am going to buy the conversion. This will convert my drum brakes to Gen 2 Viper brakes. I don't know about the kit I may be fabbing up the rear to accept the Gen 2 front calipers and rotors on the rear. They will greatly reduce the stopping distance and they weigh less. 1000HP is no good if you cannot stop!
Update: Found a set of 4 Gen 1 Calipers and the rear rotors. Here is a picture of the front calipers.
Yes they do look rough. I will be getting them rebuilt and powder coated Red and White to match.
