My first car was a 1971 Chevy Monte Carlo. It featured a 350 cubic engine with a turbo transmission and bucket seats. I was only 14 when I got the car and starting driving it at the age of 15. The Monte Carlo was very clean and it had 245 horse power engine. I drove it stock until I was a senior in high school Over the summer after eleventh grade I got enough money to put on some wire wheels with some 560 tires. It sure made a difference in how the car looked and it was enough to get "props" from most of my homies and the ladies. For the most part, my homies Rene and Cesar would roll with me whenever we went cruising in Hollywood or at the Canyon. In the summer after I graduated from high school I had the Monte chopped and I slapped on a Candy Root Beer over a Gold Base. The new paint and customized convertible made the Monte stand out from the rest. I cruised the Monte for two years. One of the more memorable experiences was cruising new years eve in Pasadena at the Rose Parade. I planned on keeping the Monte for many years hoping to preserve it until it become a true antique lowrider. One morning on the way to UCLA I was struck from the back by a Jeep Cherokee after a sudden slow down in traffic. Since the frame of the Monte had been weakened after it had been converted into a convertible, the Monte crumpled like a cardboard box. The Monte was totaled! After about six months I acquired a beat up old 1972 Monte Carlo. It was not nearly as clean as my original Monte but I didn't care because I planned to do a complete overhaul on the car, inside and out.The car spent six months in the works while they prepped the new Monte for a new paint job. I didn't cut this one into a convertible. On the day the car was to be sprayed I noticed that the quality of the bodywork was not up to my standard. I delayed the painting of the car until the bodywork was perfected. The new paint is a Candy Apple Red over a Blue Base with 2 gallons of clear. The paint is high quality Deltron paint. I added thirteen inch triple gold Daytons. I installed a new Alpine sound system and replaced the interior. Once again I am rolling the Monte.Although these days I don't drive the Monte much, I still have it parked in my garage pending completion of a few details. One of these days I will finish my project and cruise it around for old time sake.
