1984 Ford Thunderbird. The car started out as a 3.8 E.F.I. V-6, AOD, and 2.78 7.5 inch rear axle, rear 9 inch drums, and 10 inch front rotors. I see Mustangs everywhere, and wanted something different. I chose the 84 Thunderbird because i like the style of the body. Plus i can use most aftermarket parts for a Mustang for my car. This site is basically a journal of my Project car.
The car had some front end damage so off with the bad on with the good. I tried a couple of ways (info from the internet from other people changing E.F.I. to carb.)to get the E.F.I. wiring harness altered enough to work with a carb setup. No luck !!! A major pain in the ASS !! So after some research found that with the Thunderbird and Cougar, 1983 was the only year that offered a 3.8 2 bbl carb setup. That was my ticket for a no problem plug n play wiring harness. That is why the whole car was striped and rewired from bumper to bumper!!!
You know i got tired of going to the junk yard every weekend. So i bought 3 part cars for my project.1983 Thunderbird, 1983 Cougar, 1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Saves alot of money in gas and admission fees.
I chose a 1989 Mustang 5.0 (block i.d. xxx)for my powerplant. Bored .030 over, Comp Cams .498 lift hyd.cam, Edelbrock Perfromer RPM intake manifold, E6SE Cylinder heads gasket ported, 3 angled vale job, Grind that stupid emission "hump" out of the exhuast ports, Ford Racing shortie headers. Cloyes true double roller timing chain. Ford Racing 9mm plug wires, MSD distributor. Edelbrock Elite Aluminum valve covers, Holley 600 CFM street carb, blow out protection, vacuum secondary. Holley true flow triangle air cleaner. Most air cleaners would hit on my Ram Air scoops, This one sits about 4 inches away for a true Ram Air effect. Ford Racing fuel block off plate. Meiling high pressure oil pump. Ford heavy duty water pump.
I am using the stock fuel tank (new) and sending unit. Holley Blue electric fuel pump, Regulator, and Professional Products fuel filter. The fuel line is -8 from the tank to the carb. Never really knew how bigh -8 was till my package from Jegs arrived.
Here are the pictures of the rear suspension and rear axle. I chose the 1987 Turbo Coupe 8.8 3.55 locking rear axle,Rear 10 inch Disc brakes, and rear sway bar. KYB for all my shock and strut parts. C.H.E upper/lower tubler rear control arms with polyurethane bushings (thanks eric at coolcats).1987 5.0 Thunderbird Sport for the front/rear coil springs.
Here is my transmission, 1979 Ford Fairmont V-8 C-4 transmission. Rebuilt with about 2000 stall (not much), and a deep Aluminum pan. B&M Transmission cooler, a must for any Ford Transmission!!!
