UPDATE on Page 9
(November 08, 2009 )
The updates are always at the bottom of the page . So scroll down for the current status of the restauration ;) Thank you!
Today (March 19, 2009) I got my certificate from Volkswagen . All data of the car are on this document: e.g. the DAY OF BUILT :), the color and clothing. Look at it! Then I found an original advertisment for the 1968 Beetle with semi automatic. It costs 5899 DM (approx. 2950 Euros) in 1968!! What a cheap price when I think at the cost I've invested so far...

This white-red Beetle was the first Beetle of all I've bought. He's called ED because his license plate has this two letters on it. I have had to differentiate the cars, because I owned two 68th Beetle at one time. The second has been sold in the meantime.
I own ED since 1994. Build it up in 8 weeks (new paint, overhaulin the engine...) and you can see the result here.
The car is original so far. It's lowerd by an adjustable front axle, the wheels are 15x7'' and ED runs on 195/60 tires and EMPI 5-Spoke wheels.
The engine ? Standard. 44 HP with 1.5 liter.
The special on this car is the transmission: it is the semi-automatic gearbox . I don't know, whether you know this 'cool way of driving' ?
In short sentences: you have a 'normal' gearbox with three gears but without a clutch. It acts automatically, if you touch the gear stick to change gears. I perfer this kind of transmissions, so I own three of them.
The most of the Beetles are endangered you can say, because the most of them becom the regular gearbox build in. The advantage of the car with this system is the rear axle. It is the better one, with a very good roadability and the front axle has the diskbrakes as standard what makes it possible, to give the car an engine tuning up to 80 HP, without changing the brakes.
So it is my mission: to keep the semi-automatic alife ;)!
I can tell you: with the semi-automatic, you are the king on trafficlight start ups ! If you push the pedal down, the guy near or behind you, smells your dust ;) The performance is unbelivible, if you bethought, that there are just 44 HP in the back. Through the good gear transmission ratio it's possible, to drive until 45 kmh in the first gear, until 90 in the second and up to around 140 kmh with the third gear ! It's too funny to watch your opponent shifting, while you just force the pace....
If you have the possibility to drive a semi-automatic: DO IT !
