On June 17, 2005 the City of Phoenix Police Dept donated a 1995 police cruiser to my racing for education program. Here's the 9C1 I received, parked at the surplus yard awaiting a strip down before the public auction. She's a 'one owner' car with only 102,000 easy miles. NOT!
The body was rough with plenty of high speed scrapes. Here's a typical door scrape.
The price was right so with keys in hand and I drove it away. Little did I know, I wouldn't get very far. Keep reading.
During the drive, she ran okay but seemed a bit constipated. Suprisingly, the A/C, car radio, and the police radio all worked. 10 miles into my trip back to my station, a passing motorist honked and seemed to be giving me the finger. Actually, she was pointing towards the rear of my car but I ignored her assuming she was just a Caprice fan like me.
Little did I know, the exhaust system was plugged and shooting fire out of the exhaust. 2 miles from my exit on the freeway, the car died so I coasted about 1/4 mile and took the 7th street exit into a Shell Gas Station @ 7th street and Beardsley RD. The plugged exhaust system was so hot, the back seat foam, factory rubber floor matting, and wire harness started smoking and smoldering. Oh GREAT, I'm at a gas station and I'M ON FIRE!!!!
Here's a shot of the police Mobil Data Terminal and other 'stuff'
Using my still functioning police radio in a calm voice, I notified dispatch that i could use the fire dept RIGHT NOW! Well, the fire dept arrived & did what they do. They seemed to find humor in filling my 9C1 with water. Anyway, one of the fire fighters wrote 'HOT' on the rear quarter panel. Funny guy.
Here's what it looked like after the back seat and rubber floor mat were removed. That wiring harness, ABS reluctor wire, fuel lines, shocks, etc were all toast!
