this is my baby a 1987 DODGE DAYTONA SHELBY Z it has the 2.2 Turbo 2 engine and 5spd getrag trans

in the short time that i have owned it me and this little beast have had many adventures, even humbling a 98 mustang cobra while the shelbys only mod was raised boost (some people just cannot drive)

EEEEEWWWWWW dirty

unfortunatly all good things come to an end, at 107,000 miles the oil pump seized causing the #3 rod bearing to spin killing two rods and the crank. so... the 2.2 was pulled, torn down, and sent to R&M machine shop in killeen tx

"powered by dave"

the only parts that were kept were the block, oil pan, intermediate shaft, flywheel, and the two surviving rods.

for the top end, the stock head was found to be cracked so it was replaced by a new casting (based on 782 head) Enforcer 1 ported head from forward motion (which from here on will be refered to simply as FM) tha cam was swapped for FM's 475 .460 lift bumpstick along with the proper valve springs. the valves are stainless steel in the stock size with backcuts on both intake and exhaust sides, topped with mopar performance chrome moly retainers as well as mp high rpm lifters and rocker arms.

the turbo and ex manifold were swaped for a rebuilt 89' spec turbo (vac nipple on compressor side and 2.5 inch swingvalve) and a ported manifold, both from FWD performance

the block was bored .040 over to accept JE forged aluminum pistons which were mated to a set of stock T2 rods turned by a lighter cast crank. all reciprocating parts were balanced

when i got the block back i painted it Chrysler industrial red and put on a nice valvecover i scored on ebay (i got in big trouble for keeping an engine in the barracks)

all installed

nice shot of the T3 turbo and the braided oil/water lines

pic of the stock interior (note the exceedingly nasty old pioneer tape deck and the mack truck shifter)

interior after adding a 2 gauge a pillar pod (boost/afr) and having 3in cut out of shifter

custom gauge pod for: egt, oil press, and water temp

interior mock up (note the awesome alpine head unit and trip computer)

nice side shot

turbo xs type H bov LOUD!

installed and plumbed

detail on the shifter console, the shifter is made out of aluminum and has a nice weight to it (the bottom ring is clear with blue LEDs that are wired in with the lights) the covered switch controls the turbo XS dual-stage boost controler

digital dash cluster from a 89 lebaron turbo waiting for me to wire it in

car photoshoped (badly) with SSR competition rims

SO WHATS NEXT?
Sadly i was deployed to iraq before i was able to finish getting the bugs out of the new engine (i think the idiots at autostoned gave me the wrong timing belt) however the car was towed back to NJ and is being finished up in a shop there where it will receive: a full 3in exhaust system, a custom mark grant suspension, and a few other goodies. plans for when i get back include: a race roll bar, front and rear strut bars, a panhard bar, ssr comp rims, and eventually a hybrid 2.2 DOHC being fed by a big bad garret GT series turbo

*UPDATE* car is about a week away from getting out of the shop. word is that she runs great but that pretty valvecover cracked and is spraying oil everywhere so guess i need a new one. im finally getting to go home on leave here in about 2 weeks so we'll see about some new pics while im back

Mockup shots of the hybrid 2.2 setup

Update!!!!!

she is BACK and better than ever!

got her up to 10 pounds of boost while i was home (the stock intercooler hoses are 17 years old and are pretty spongey which seriously limits my max boost :( ) but even with only 10psi she rips harder than she ever did before when she was pushing 15psi.

full turbo back, 3in exhaust. no bumblebee farts comin from THIS car, the note is very deep and growly for a 4 banger.

Koni/Eibach suspension
