UPDATE 10-1-06
Saturday night was my first night in the car this year. It went pretty well, far beyond how I thought it would go. Before I went out for my heat race, the guy that ran the car all year told me to take it easy and just get a handle on the car. I started 2nd in the heat race and, so I was told, got a great jump on the start. I actually lead the first lap before the more experienced drivers got by me. I ended up finishing 5th, which was good enough to get in the feature. Actually, and spot was good enough to get in the feature because of the small car count. So i started 14th in the feature and as soon as it started, i dropped to the back, on purpose. I didn't want to wreck the car so i hung around the back of the pack and let everyone else beat each other up. I avoided a few wrecks, stayed out of the red flag wreck, passed a car and ended up finishing 10th out of 17. I didn't think I finished that far up but oh well. Not my problem if they made a mistake. I got $10 and the satisfaction of a top ten in my first race. By the way, the car is for sale so if anyone is interested, let me know.
UPDATE 9-17-06
ok guys. the first annual 4 Cylinder Dirt Championship at Farmer City Raceway is over and GuyCast racing faired pretty well. There was a total of 96 cars signed in for this event and there were some fast ones. Threre was 8 heat races and we were in the first and started 5th. They took the top 3 into the main event and the top 2 into 2 seperate dashes that paid $100 apiece. We finished 6th in our heat and, honestly, i was gettin worried. i didnt think we were gonna have a good night but things got better. i noticed that, after the heat race, the bracket holding the throttle cable was loose, causing us to only get about half throttle. we tightened it up and sent our driver out for the first of 4 semi-features, knowing we needed a top 2 finish to gain a spot in the big show. we were running third and fourth all race but with 2 laps to go, he made his move, and we finished.....second. so we made the race and knew we had our work cut out for us. they started the feature with 33 cars, eleven rows of three. yes, they started exactly like the indy 500. we started 29th, the middle of row 10. our driver knew that since the race was 50 laps, he had to be patient and just cautiously work his way to the front. and thats exactly what he did. by lap 25, im pretty sure we were in the top 15 and with 5 laps to go, we were running 8th. we ended up finishing 11th, 1 lap down, out of the 17 cars that finished. some of you may say that 11th is nothing to be proud of, but considering what has happened this year, how our luck has gone, and taking into account where we started, i am extremely happy. we have one more race planned for this year. i will be making my 2006 debut in the last race of the season on 9-29 at Jacksonville Raceway, in Jacksonville, Illinois. Seeing as how thats where im going to school, we will probably race there next year and we want to start getting ready. I will be behind the wheel next year. I am looking into getting a helmet cam for the 29th and also for next year to give people an idea of how much work driving a racecar is. We talked to our engine builder today and he said that he wants to put an experimental engine in our car. dont know what that means but i like the sound of it. thats all for now. the next tine you hear from me, it will be the last race results of the year. i might do a year in review so be on the lookout for that.
UPDATE 8-1-06
Sorry it's been so long but i've been without internet for about a week now. Anyways, the last time we raced was back on July 22nd. We started the heat race on the pole, and when the green flag dropped, we never looked back. The car ran as close to perfect as you can get and we won by about 5 seconds (which equated to about a full straightaway on a 1/4 mile dirt track). We started the feature in 3rd and ended up 6th. Not a bad night but there is always room for improvement. We just got the head back the other day. We had it ported and polished. Should up our horsepower by an estimated 30% so look for us to be winning some races soon. We've got a new car on the way but i think we broke the bank on this one. It's just a body with no engine, transmission, or any suspension parts. $75 bucks. So now begins the fun part. We need paint and number ideas. If you got one, let me know.
UPDATE 7-20-06
Sorry i'm late but I got my new laptop and i've been messin' around with that all week. Anywho, In the heat race last Saturday at Lincoln, we started 3rd. I didn't get to see it so I really don't know how the car ran. Obviously pretty good if we finished 2nd. In the feature, we started 6th. Car ran well but with about 3 laps to go, the nut holding the lower control arm on the spindle came off. This caused the left front wheel to flop around, so we had to pull off. We ended up 19th. :-/ Checked out the point standings and turns out that, even with all the bad luck we've had, we're currently 10th in the standings. That's all for now. Peace!
UPDATE 7-11-06
Things are starting to pick up. We went to Lincoln Saturday night, their first night under new management, and I must say, the track was the best ever. Anyway, back to how we did. In the heat race, we started 5th. At the start, we went backwards a little but as soon as we got up to speed, we started passing cars. We ended up finishing 3rd to earn a good starting spot in the feature. We started 5th in the feature and we did descent. Although we finished one spot behind of where we started (6th), we learned a lot. We proved that we can run with one of the top cars in our class. So we ordered a new rearend gear so we can keep the rpm's up at the end of the straightaway. We were running out about 3/4 of the way down the straight and that's where everyone was getting us. Not now. We're dropping down from a 3.73 rearend gear to a 3.55. We will lose a little on the acceleration but will have more in the long run. That's all for now. Check back next week and see how we did. Later!
UPDATE 7-3-06
Saturday was good. We finally got a good starting spot in the heat race. We started 1st but ended up finishing 5th because of a brake problem. It turns out that my dad took the outside brake rotor off of the left front brake assembly. This caused us to not have any front brakes (the right front was never hooked up) and when our driver would try to set the car into the corner, the rear wheels would lock up, causing the car to push. I rememdied the situation and we went out to srat the feature in 7th. It was a long race, which allowed us to work our way up. At one time, we had gotten up to 3rd, but the guys that started in the back were catching up. A yellow flag came out and bunched the field up. We stayed in 3rd for another 5 laps before being overtaken. After that, nobody else challenged us for the 4th place position and that where we finished. I like running up front. You don't get your shit torn up that way. We should do it more often. All in all, it was a good night. We got our first top 5 and had an overall good points night. We're going to be @ Jacksonville Raceway in Jacksonville, Illinois this thursday then back @ Lincoln on Saturday. Everyone have a safe and happy 4th!
UPDATE 7-1-06
Sorry it took me so long to get this on here but we've been busy. After a 2 week hiatus because of the rain, we finally got to race last saturday at Lincoln. In the heat race, we started last. The slower cars held us up and we finished 7th.
In the consilation, we started 7th and worked our way to a 4th place finish to transfer to the feature. In the feature, we started 20th. We were working our way through the field before someone flipped in front of us. At least it wasn't us this time. Car seemed to be running exceptionally well, compared to the previous weeks. We got up to 8th, but ended up with an 11th place finish. We'll take it. Considering how we have been finishing, i'm glad we now know that we have a top ten car. Now, on to the adjustments. At the track, we thought we broke the flywheel and the starter because we had to push start the car all night. Well, we took the starter off last sunday and found out that there was nothing wrong with the flywheel or the gear on the starter. So, we got an idea. We put jumper cables on the battery in the racecar and then connected the cables to the starter. It wasn't engaging. We then, just to make sure, hooked the cables to the battery in our truck and the starter kicked in on the first try. Come to find out, the battery was only @ 44% and had 2 dead cells. We also had to redo the fan shroud. It wasn't colling the engine properly, so we had to extend it. We also put in some braces in the front to protect from another wreck. If you look at the pictures from the wreck, the whole front end was moved quite a bit, and if we get hit again, it'll probably fall off. We replaced the battery, the timing belt, and did some body work and we're ready to go tonight. Check back soon to see how we did.
UPDATE 6-14-06
We took the motor apart yesterday to put a new head gasket in and we found some big problems. The #1 piston had a piece missing from the edge of it. The was melted metal on top of the piston and at the top of the cylinder, on the head. The spark plug was charred and we thought we had big problems. We took the block to McQuinn Auto Service in Springfield this morning. He seemed as if it wasnt a big deal and said he might have it done today or tomorrow. I took the head to Donnelly in Decatur and he said it shouldnt take very long to fix that. Our backup plan is to meet a guy in Pontiac, IL and pick up a new motor. I'll get pictures of the piston and the head that I will get on as soon as possible.
UPDATE 6-12-06
We didn't get to go racing this weekend because of the rain. We did, however, get the front end straightend and the new body parts on. All thats left for the body is some touch up work and paint. We had it running the other day, and whenever you let of the gas, it would pop. We think the timing is off (yet again). It could also be a bad piston, which would be the worse case scenario. Our "engine builder" said, that since we dont know how long we drove the car at 255 degrees, we could have a bad piston. If that's the case, we've got some work to do before saturday. That's all for now. I'll get some new pics up soon.
UPDATE 6-5-06
I realize that i have been starting a lot of these with "well........" I'm not gonna do that this time. So let's get straight to it. I think we finally got the car running right. We still need more horsepower though. Those fucking 16 and 24 valve Japanese shits are just beating the holy hell out of us and our 8 valves. On to the results from last night at Lincoln. We were supposed to start 9th (dead last) in the heat race, but we were too busy getting the timing and the carburetor set right, that we missed the heat race. So we finished 9th in that. Because of that, we had to run the consilation race. We started 11th in that. When he pulled out into the track, he was already half a lap down because he was late getting out there. So we worked to catch up. Then there was a yellow flag because someone spun in front of us and we tagged him. HARD. Check out the pics and the video if you don't believe me. It bunched the pack up and gave us a good shot at a transfer, but we jumped the restart so we had to go to the back again. Coming around for the white flag, we were in 7th, two spots out of the transfer. We didn't have much faith but we pulled it out and finished 5th to transfer to the feature. So far this year we have made every feature, which helps when running for points. So in the feature, we had to start 19th. We patiently worked our way up to 12th before we were forced to exit the race bue to overheating problems from the wreck in the Consilation. All in all, it was a good day (except for all the fucking damage). We finally got the car running right, we now know what we have to do to get up front, and we have 6 days to do about a months worth of body work in. This week should be fun!
UPDATE 5-29-06
Well...........Things didn't go to well for us last night. I didn't get ot see the heat race because of the race order for the night. We obviously didn't to to well because we had to run the consilation race. We started 6th in that and finished 3rd to transfer. In feature, we were running about midpack when we went into turn 1. Some dumass got into out left-rear quarter panel, spun us around, and we ended up barrel rolling about 6 times. Here's the kicker. The car landed on it's wheels. We saw our driver get out, walk around the car, and then he got back in! We thoought he was going to finishe the race! But he didn't. Turns out all that happened was some body damage and a ruined right front tire. We also bent the right axle. Not the result we wanted but it looked awesome! Our driver was ok just to let you know.
UPDATE 5-24-06
We got some bad news today. The part of the motor that the distributor gear connects to it totally fucked up. We ordered a new one from florida (same place we got the cam) that should be here friday. check out page 4 for the pics of the newly discovered ruined part. We decided to put the old, single point distributor in since the car won a race last year with it. I dont know if we're gonna change carbs or intake manifolds this week. we've got a 500 carb on it but we were thinking that its pouring too much fuel into that small of a motor. the intake manifold that is on the car is the one that came on the 1979 motor from the factory. the one we got is lighter, bigger, and would prolly make us go faster but we have clearance issues. with the new one on, the hood won't shut and i really dont want 2 cut a hole in the hood. we'll figure something out. PEACE!
UPDATE 5-21-06
The distributor gear is totally fucked up. Check out the pics on page 4.
UPDATE 5-21-06
I'm gonna cut the small talk and get right to the point. We went to Lincoln last night. In the heat race we started 8th and finshed 5th to transfer to the feature. In the feature, we started 10th and didn't even make one mother-fucking lap. The electronic ignition module got fried, which caused the ignition system to completely shut down. No ignition=No go. If you can't tell I'm a little pissed off. We can't catch a break. But, that's part of racing.
UPDATE 5-16-06
Weather got us this weekend. We didn't get to do anything because it rained and it was freezing. The WoO Late Model race at Farmer City got washed out. We got the new camshaft in. Should allow us to run 5500 - 6000 rpm in 2nd gear. We were only running 4000. The timing still isn't right and we don't know why it keeps jumping out of time. We'll get it figured out though. We're going to be racing twice this week. Farmer City on Friday and Lincoln on Saturday. Just so you know, we are 21st in points at Lincoln. We will finish in the top 10. That is a guarantee.
UPDATE 5-7-06
Well.............we went racing last night @ Lincoln. It didn't go bad but it didn't go well. In the heat race, we started 5th and finished 7th. The car wasn't running right. We weren't geeting enough rpm's. They took the top 5 to the feature so we had to run the consilation race. After the heat race, we had to reset the timing and the distributor. In the consolation race, we were supposed to start 3rd, but the guy in front of us scratched so we started 1st. We ended up 3rd and made the feature. Although the car wasn't running right, it ran better. In the feature, we started 18th. The car ran the best in this race, but it was too good to be true. It seems like that whenever we are running good, somehting happens, which was exactly the case last night. We were up to 7th after about 5 laps when the radiator hose came off. We had a solid top 5, maybe top 3, but had to settle for 17th. We also found out that we have the wrong camshaft in the engine. Thanks a lot eBay.
UPDATE 5-3-06
We might have big problems. My dad took the car to Springfield to get the timing fixed today. He got the timing set but our engine guy said the valves are floating. We're not sure but we think it might be the camshaft. Possibly might be the wrong one.
UPDATE 5-2-06
Last night, my cousin and his dad came over to help my dad and I put the transmission and driveshaft back in. Went well. All we have left to do to get ready for this weekend is to get the timing set and we'll be ready to go.
UPDATE 4-29-06
Went to Farmer City last night. Didn't go to well. We started 1st in the heat race but something happened. When our driver pushed the pedal to the floor, the car would blubber and wouldn't go. He also said that when he only pushed the throttle halfway down, the car would go. We finshed the race in 6th place. When we started looking at things in the pits, we found out that the engine was WAY out of time and we blew the rear seal and also the oil pan gasket. We also found out that the flywheel was shit so we're going to have to change that. Today we took the driveshaft and transmission out so we could change the flywheel and possibly the clutch. By the way, all you late models fans will be happy to know that Shannon Babb won the Late Model race.
UPDATE 4-26-06
Put the nead back on today. Also put the new intake manifold on. Check out the latest pics on page 4.
UPDATE 4-24-06
We didn't go racing this weekend. Took head off to put a new camshaft in and found out that two of the lobes were ground down causing the valves to stick. We were really running on a bout two and a half cylinders last week! I will get pics up as soon as possible.
UPDATE 4-18-06
Turns out it was just the freeze plug. Went racing last Saturday at Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, IL. Started 7th in the heat and finished 3rd. Started 7th in the feature and finished 8th. We were in 2nd about halfway through the feature when the car started slowing down. The next day we realized that a spark plug wire came off. We got 8th out of 20 on 3 cylinders!
UPDATE 4-5-06
We were working on the car last night and put some water in the radiator. We then realized we had a problem when the water just ran out the back of the motor. We think we blew a freeze plug but it could be a cracked block. Hope its the freeze plug. I will get some more pics up soon as the car gets home.
