MODIFICATION: Warm Air Intake(WAI)

The problem:
The supercharger produces a lot of heat causing the engine components to become hot, heat the firewall, heat the passenger area, and reduce engine power.

The solution:
Create a warm air management sytem to direct the warm air out of the engine compartment and create a cold air management system to direct cold air to wash over the hot components.

Warm air management system.
Air enters the front of the car and passes though the radiator either by pumping from the fans or by motion of the car. This warm air is directed around the engine by the splash guard that is attached just behind the radiator at the bottom and continues under the front of the motor.

I have added an aluminum baffel just behind the radiator at the top and continues under the supercharger crossover intake tube and ends at the engine. This allows the warm air from behind the radiator to wash over the engine, become directed by the firewall and transmission tunnel down and under the car to exit at the rear.

Flat aluminum sheet from the hardware store (~$14) and short sheet metal screws to attach at the front. Be sure they are short so as to not puncture the top of the radiator.

Custom cold air management.
With the removal of the OEM air baffel in front of the hood latch, this same aluminum baffel can also serve to redirect cold air, that has not entered the radiator, to cool the engine. Air that does not enter the radiator will pass up over the top of the radiator and enter the engine compartment below the hood and wash over the top of the engine, firewall, mix with the warm air, go down under the vehicle and exit at the rear. This serves to cool the supercharger crossover tube, cool the top of the engine and cool the firewall.

The results:
With the addition of one piece of flat aluminum the passenger area around the transmission tunnel and the passenger foot area are much cooler. The top of the engine seems much cooler. The engine temperature is stable and exactly in the center of the coolant temperature gauge.

Where did you get the white gauge faces? I've been looking for a set exactly like those and can't find any. I like the bright blue illumination, but most of the reverse-el gauges have a luminous ring in the center around the needle that I couldn't live with.

Wow. I gotta say, you have one of the cleanest, best built Miatas out there. Very tasteful! Love the LS5 wheels. Come see mine if you get a chance, Id like to see what you think.

Like your car. I would like to know where you got the gauge pod on the dash. Barry
