HEATER CORE REPLACEMENT
Heater core cost about $40 + $20s/h
The big fuss is about having to remove a lot of stuff to get to it. But, there is always one, BECOUSE it is Audi made in Germany disasembling is peace of cake also assembling. All made for people and ease of mind.
The dealer wanted about $1200 + $200 for heater core. My mechanic wanted $750 + $150 for heater core. I wanted heat during winter and wanted for less that a $100.
well my way and cheap:
1. remove the nobs climate control, pull them may need extra help from screw driver.
2. remove two screws holding the panel.
3. remove the panel.
4. remove four screws holding the climate control mother board. (corners)
4.a. If you have voltmer, remove extra two screws.
4.b. remove the prity panelon top of voltmer.
5. remove the radio if you have one.
6. remove the nozels, that direct air (in center top).
7. remove four screws in corners of the center panel (in after nozels, and below the climate control and above voltmer).
8. pull the center consol out a little.
9. unplug the control panel in the back (if you unplug it the turn signal wont work, plug it back and it will work).
10. put the panel somewhere safe like trunk.
11. open the glove compartment (where you store a gun on the pessenger side).
12. on the sides remove the clips holding it. (remove the top two, then it will fall down and then remove the back two).
13. put it some where safe like trunk.
14. remove the glove's compartment helder by unscrewing two screws and two nuts. I think 10mm socket.
15. unplug the light.
16. put it somewhere safe like trunk.
17. use male socket 1/4" too unscrew the Airbag. (big screw in the midle inside on top. (passenger side)[simply use a conector that you conect between two 1/4" female, or use any tip from a screw driver, the changeble heads]
18. unplug Airbag (orange connector I think) also the second connector take it out. [PULL]
19. put it away like trunk.
20. inside you will tube going across, remove it.
21. after that you will see four screws in front not on top and bottom. use T30 and remove them.
22. remove the cover of the wheel, two screws under.
23. remove the airbag by unscrewing it behind the stiring wheel (male socket 4mm)
24. put it some where safe like trunk. by now you should have 1/2 of the trunk full.
25. use socket 24mm or 1" to unscrew the wheel.
26. unplug the connectors a black with one wire, and one that is holded by bronse holder on instrument cluster.
27. take out the stiring wheel by gigiling it side to side and up to down.
28. give it to your kid or put it safe in the trunk.
29. revove three screws under the wheel in front.
30. remove the bottom cover.
31. release the switch holder (male socket 4mm or 6mm dont remember)
32. unplug it and take it out.
33. put in away from kids or adults who behaves as kids. (DANGER easily broken) Trunk on the side would be good.
34. remove two screws holding cluster (bottom)
35. pull it out and unplug it (four connectors, dont be afreid theiy come in colors, preatty)
36. put away like trunk, you may want to check the light bulbs and/or roll couple thouthent miles back or put zero like you just bought the car (illigal or not, no idea).
37. under the wheel there is a shild or cover holded by three screws, two hidden under black round caps, third is all the way at the end of the cover (near airbag connector and neer the door) (dont forget to take that connector out before removing the cover) 10mm screws
38. unscrew three screws holding wires to the dash board.
39. unscrew a nut holding an air duck to the heater/air switch box (in central panel)
40. there is four screws, where is nozels to heat the legs on both sides.
41. on the sides there is four screws passenger side and driver side, under black round caps as where in #37. 8mm
Maybe you will need help with that, heavy.
42. Put the gear in 2 or 4 if manual or D if auto dont forget to put in handbreak. central bottom part of the torpido push IN then UP then PULL. PULL the torpido to clear the all the stuff. push in all the wires in while puling the torpido. this is where I got stranded for like 15 min under the torpido. got out the back.
43. pull torpido out the front dore and put it on top of the car carefully upside down. (the soft to the roof)
44. the panel with voltmer has to be also removed or at leaset moved to the side, where there is a hand break one screw under a cover vertical, in the back before a garbege disposal, one nut inside a square cover horizontal.
45. there is a cross member going over the air tubes going for the back passenger legs. remove it two screws.
46. remove both air passages.
47. unscrew a air pasasge going from the center to the bottom part of the box. two screws.
48. unscrew a screw holding bottom part to the box after the throtale pedal.
49. remove the bottom part.
50. remove the calipers holding air box and A/C evaporator.(total 5 clips, you can see only 3 two in front one on top.
51. under the hood unscrew 2 nuts holding the box to the body. (more to passenger side under the two tubes.)
52. there is a metal thin holded by three screws just after the key (ignition).
53. use some or a lot of force to get the box out, it is still holded by two clips.
54. when it is out move it a little so that you have enought space to take out the heater core.
55. take it out and course it.
56. and start doing it all back when you putted new one in. (DO NOT REBUILD, WORTHLESS) also the two clips that were behind are not used again becouse you cannot reach it back, unless you disconnect A/C and take the A/C eveporator out too(No need).
You will have minor leak there, so a bit of cold air will pass the box and probably go to your side of the car.
After assemblig dont forget to connect and check, actually when you will put the box with new heater in put theree clips in, two nuts in engine compartment, connect it add coolant and start the car put the climate control onto heat, fan speed on and smell if you will smell the coolant, if yes make a big fuss and replace the heater ones again, else turn off the engine and continue assembling.
