Swapping Out Ignition Coils and Spark Plugs In Your VQ30DE-K
Works For Most 4th and 5th Gen Maximas (Except) 02-03)

makdaddy386's 2000 Nissan Maximamakdaddy386's 2000 Nissan Maxima

Tools Needed:
- 3/8 drive rachet
- 3/8 drive long extension (or a few medium ext.)
- 3/8 spark plug socket
- 10mm socket
- Allen/Torx driver

Before You Start:
Save yourself the hassle and go through Dave B at Southpoint Nissan for the parts. Great guy and he makes the process absolutely headache free. Also if you are replacing your ignigtion coils make sure to get the newer coils which have a grey dot on them. Part number for these were 22448-2Y000 and 22448-2Y005. Also if you didn't think to, now is a good time to replace your plugs as well. NGK Iridiums were used here. They run around $6 full price per plug.

The run down:
1. I recommend starting off with the rear coils on cylinders 1,3,5 for the sheer fact that these are the hardest to do and once you get through these the fronts are a breeze. So start out by locating the three coil harnesses. They will be grey with a green tab the you will push toward the ground inside the harnesses releasing it from the coil itself.

2. Once you have the harnesses disconnected, set them aside and you will be removing the 10mm bolts securing the coils down. Each coil has one bolt. Once you remove all three bolts, you can just pull the coils right out of the engine.

3. Now that the rear 3 coils are out you can move to the front three on cylinders 2,4,6. Start by removing the cover plate via the 4 allen screws pictured.

4. Now you should have the front three coils exposed. Remove the three harnesses as you did on the rear. Then remove the coils via the 10mm bolts, also like the rear. Then just pull the coils out.

5. You can now see the plugs inside the engine. To remove these you will want to use a spark plug socket becuase it will hold the plug which will pull it out of the engine for you when you remove the socket.

9. Installation is just the reverse of removal. Just make sure when you put the plugs in not to tighten them too much. You will only want to tighten these a little bit past finger tight.

New "grey dot" coils installed:

Hi there. I'm fairly new to this site. I'm loving the community here, so I want to contribute to everyone this article I read that really changed my life financially. Last week I got a check for $900! Really, no joke, I thought I couldn't do it myself, but I did. And it really helped me out my family financially because i'm a stay at home mom. But here's the article I read: http://www.news4show.com/finance/google-hiring-you.html hopefully it works out for you too. Good luck and God bless!

These instructions worked great for my 1998 Maxima SE. Thanks for taking the time to post them!I stopped at Midas for a price quote: $475 to replace the starter. Wow! I bought a new starter at the parts store down the street (could have gotten one even cheaper on eBay but wanted it right away) and changed it myself -- took less than an hour and saved over $300.

Thanks for the incredibly detailed write-up! The only thing I messed up was over-tightening the nut on the starter's electrical connection. Sheared it off because it is soft copper. The parts shop gave me a once-per-lifetime, free "lesson learned" replacement. That's one advantage to a buying from a family-owned, local shop. Had to do the whole remove/install over but now I'm an expert!

ok. my second post about the starter replacement tutorial. I got up early this morning new starter, tools and these directions in hand. Dude, I never could have done it without your directions. Took all the guess work out. Only problem was mine had ABS and the ABS box is right in front of the big 14mm bolt so it took a lot more time and patience than it should have, but everything went off without a hitch. Thank you again man. You've given me hope for future repairs on my vehicle.
