Currys Meet on 13-Jul-2002 and Simeons Dyno Run

John (RevHigh on the RoadFly board) was kind enough to invite the folks on the E38 board to attend an E31 gathering at Currys Auto Service in Sterling, Virginia, on Saturday 13-Jul-2002. It was a great opportunity to meet other folks on the board and see some great cars. For me, it was also an honor to finally meet Simeon and Big-T. I also had the honor and privilege of getting two rides in Simeons Baby, once with Simeon at the helm and once with Big-T at the helm.

In addition to the blown motor, Baby has the Big Brembo brake kit and a coil-over spring setup. Even though the car is setup for racing, it has a surprisingly compliant ride. It handles like a high-end sports car; it felt like it was pushing close to 1g on the curves. It accelerates like the Space Shuttle taking off. And, it stops on a dime. You dont need the seat belts in this car to protect you in case of an accident; you need them just to stay in your seat. Man, that is one impressive ride.

Two examples of what fine German engineering is all about. The more pedestrian version of the E38 on the right is mine while the beast in sheeps clothing on the left is Simeons Baby.

Simeons Baby on the dyno. Go to Simeons CarDomain site for the full story on this magnificent machine. Simeons Baby averaged 355hp and 335 lb-ft torque at the rear wheels. We actually saw it hit 362hp once. Simeon and Big-T stand together in the first two pictures.

The car that really started it all in the US and kept BMW viable so that we could enjoy the great machines that BMW has produced over the years. This example is Alans (Denkoar on the board) 1976 2002. John also has an E38, but decided to treat us to his 2002 at the meet. Alan is the one with the BMW emblem on his shirt.

Pictures of the many BMWs that were at Currys, principally the E31 840s and 850s. Theres even an M6 parked right next to mine in the middle of the picture.

Several E46s were also present, four of whom were M3s. Three of the M3s had the SMG transmission. The silver convertible had a 5-speed manual and was accessorized by AC Schnitzer.

We were also treated to the newest BMW relative by birth, the Mini Cooper S. Notice that there were a few other very nice cars present as well.
