The vision of the Mustang RR was of a road race style Mustang reminiscent of the 60-70's era road racing Mustangs, to that end we wanted to build not only good looks but speed, however speed is no good unless you can control it and part of controlling speed is being able to stop quickly. Anyone who is into the car scene knows the name BAER, these guys know how to control speed and we asked them to help us.

BAER has just relesed a new rotor called the DecelaRotor and they are available as an OEM style replacement for thousands of applications with over one hundred new part numbers added every week and if you want them for your vehicle surf over to www.baer.com and check it out.

Now as you will see from the photos we are going to do a few simple upgrades you too can perform in your driveway in an afternoon to gain some performance and great looks, if you can change your brake pads you can do this upgrade.

Now we asked for some help from Hawk and Duplicolor too so you can see the dramatic difference a few hours can make to the look of your car.

The first thing you have to do is jack up the car and support it, after that remove the wheel and get ready to get dirty. Brake dust is nasty stuff so its always a good idea to wear gloves (nitrile style or a pair of Ringers) to keep your hands clean. Once you get the caliper unbolted you have to compress the piston back so you can replace the pads. This is easily accomplished by using an old pad and large "C" clamp. Make sure the master cylinder cover is loose so the fluid has somewhere to go and slowly compress the piston. It should be noted that if you are doing this on a high mileage car you would probably be better served by cracking the bleeders open and evacuating the system so you can flush it with new brake fluid.

Once you get the wheel off and look behind the caliper this is what you will see, the two bolts holding the caliper bridge to the spindle will have to come off in order to remove the rotor.

Looking down at the top of the caliper you can see two different bolts, the one with the rubber condom on it, it what holds the caliper to the bridge. The rubber protects the bolts from debris so it can move freely during heat, cold and wearing of the pads, this is commonly referred to as a floating caliper.

The bigger bolt seen here is what you have to break loose to swap out the rotor, it is much easier to do this if the wheel is turned to gain access. Leave your key in the ignition turned to unlock the steering wheel so it is easy to move. This bolt is not only tightened to nine million foot pounds but it also has elephant snot on it to keep it from coming loose. You round off the head of this bolt and you might as well sell the car.

The BAER rotors are marked with an arrow so you know which way they are supposed to rotate (yes, there is a left and right).

Remember I said we are changing the pads too? The little clips hold the pads in place in the calipers, the Hawk replacement pads are just like the OEM style. Easy off, easy on.

The Duplicolor caliper paint is practically idiot proof, I say practically because our shop lackey Chris didn't spend enough time mixing the first time around and the formula was a bit weak. The kit comes with everything you need tape, mixing stick, brush, caliper cleaner and paint. The instructions on the back of the box are simple and easy to understand so you can get the same great results we did, unless you have a "GIFTED" lackey working for you like we do.

Now onto the rear!

The rear calipers require a bit more effort and know how, Fords better idea revolves around the rear pistons having to be screwed in while being compressed, now I know there is a tool for this operation but I don't have one so a bit of MacGuyverism must be employed for this.

Once you get the caliper, bridge and rotor apart it's time to push the piston back inside the caliper, grab your "C" clamp, an old pad and a large channel locks and with your three hands, slowly tighten the clamp while holding the caliper and turning the piston clock-wise. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Once you have accomplished this side now its time to do the other! Not too shabby for a few hours work huh?
