Well,it was Rusty the Rusted Rocket's first autocross in over a year. The steering rack was rebuilt (to the extent I could), new bushings installed, frame rot removed and new metal welded in, rear brake conversion from drum to disc completed, and aligned in my garage with string and miller lites. Just making it to and from the event felt like a victory! I got four runs, took a couple riders and had a hoot. It was great to see the old faces and it was really great to see so many new faces in a year...it is awesome for the sport. I finished in the bottom quarter (as usual) but FAST autocrosses arent sending me paychecks so I am fine with that!!! So is my wife! We'ld be starving on the streets!!! Enjoy the pictures...They are from Phillip, a very tallented photographer who has the skills to make me look fast!
I will say this. As fun as it was, on the way up there my oil pressure went to zero so I was worried. The engine sounded fine, the car still had power, smelled fine, and all the other gauges were normal, so I didnt really worry about it until I was on my way home. Thats when my heat gauge spiked and a huge wad of very old antifreeze blew all over my windshield!!! I pulled into a gas station and left the car running. The heat gauge showed normal and everything was fine again. The only think I figured was that I didnt do a good enough job burping the cooling system after putting the engine back in and together. So I cleaned up the coolant over flow tank and painted it white to match the fan and fusible link covers. It lookes pretty sharp. Next up will be a new oil pressure sending unit (Jon - the first owner of the Z emailed and said he had this replaced in the past), and I think I am due for some new spark plug wires - I want to route them around the front of the valve cover...in black! I will also be installing a second oil pressure sending gauge to ease my mind. I did order another oil pump (from a turbo Z - high output) from rockauto.com just in case but it kind of looks like a mofo and I hope I dont have to do this. I am really enjoying having the Z back on the streets.
