The only place I could locate the ballasts for the HID's was close to the engine block. This can at times under prolonged lighting lead to the lights to dim and/or shut off for a cool down period. Also, excessive heat in general is not good for the ballasts.

There are two ways to solve this, either take off the front bumper and locate the ballasts below the headlight housing, or, the more practical way of doing things is to purchase a heat shield for the ballasts.

I purchased a plyable heat sheild from summitracing.com for about $25.00. DEI Versa Shields is the brand and it's true purpose is for a starter, however; you can cut it to any shape you want so it was perfect for the ballasts. It can withstand temperatures up to 2000 Degrees and is comparible to the more expensive ThermoLoc wrap.

Here's what you need:
DEI Versa Sheild Heat Wrap (7" x 24")
Ruler
Velcro Strips
Two Permanent Markers Of DIFFERENT Color
Scissors
Duct Tape
Lighter (ciggarette lighter, fireplace lighter, something that makes fire)

Step 1:

Measure the Ballasts front, back, top, bottom, sides with your ruler. Mark the ruler with one ink color with the short measurement and the other ink color for the long measurement. Then draw out your template on the heat sheild. (pay attention to lines coming out of the ballast on the bottom, notice the red arrows in the photo).

Step 2: Cut out the templates you drew, be sure to shave down the little hairs along the cuts and use a lighter to singe them tight.

Step 3:
Place 4 squares of velcro to the front and back of the ballast and two for the top, bottom, and sides of the ballast. (It's best to leave the to sides of the velcro attached to each other so there are no guesses on lineing them up later)

Step 4:

Start applying the heat sheild pieces that you cut out to the front, back, bottom, top, and sides.

Step 5:

Cut out strips of duct tape and begin to wrap the edges where the sheild pieces meet up, much like wrapping a present almost.

Step 6: Repeat on the other ballast.

That's it, now your ballasts and HID's can withstand temperatures up to 2000 Degrees. Also with the duct tape sealing there will be no chance of the ballasts contacting water! Two birds with one stone!!! HELL YEAH!

hey, nice mdx dude. it's real clean. Anyways, i have a 05 mdx, and i was thinking about putting an aftermarket head unit. I'm not quite sure how to install it, and i was wondering where you got your custom mounting kit for your head unit. Thanks!
