This is my 95 Explorer XLT 4x4. It started out as my wifes daily driver when we had our first daughter until I bought her a Suburban. Then it became my 4x4.
This is what it looked like before I started to mess with it.
Here are some shots of the interior. I've installed a 7 inch flip down monitor for the back and the head unit also has a 7 inch monitor. For speakers I used all Infinity Reference series, 6x8's in all four doors and a 10 in the rear quarter. They are powered by a 5 channel Sony amp that puts out 40x4 and 120x1. I also have a cheap DVD and 6 disc CD changer in the back mounted to the floor.
Here are some pictures of it at TDS this year.
**Update 9/2/05**
I put on some new 31" Dunlop MT's. They work a lot better than the old tires. I also installed the Alpine 10's out of my Cobra in the Explorer for a little more bass. They sound good in there. I'll post pictures as soon as I get my camera fixed. My 2 year old got ahold of it and now it won't focus.
**Update 10/15/05**
We went out and did Millers Jeep Slide last month so I removed the Alpine 10's so I would have room for camping gear. I also bought a new camera so here are a couple of pics from the Silverwood trail from this afternoon.
As you can see I have put a few dents in her wheelin but I not worried about fixing them. I'm just going to put more.
**Update 03/16/07**
Well it's been a while sence I've updated this page. Not much has changed except that I have more dents. I went to TDS this year and have now decided to do a SAS. I picked up a Dana 30 off of a 1989 Jeep Cherokee this morning for $150. The Cherokee's came with coils and a 4 link so I'll have to make some control arms.
**Update 09/28/07**
I'm still working on the SAS however, I decided to go with a leaf spring setup because of cost. A friend gave me a set of stock springs off his Wrangler. He gave me the fronts and rears. I dropped the Explorer on the front springs to see how they would sit and they were too soft and were dearched so I took the front and backs apart and made my own out of the two. I now have 7 leafs per pack and they sit level with the truck lowered on them. I'm waiting for the u-bolts to come in and then I can set the pinion and caster angles and then weld the spring perches in place. I also have to fab up the steering. I'll take soe pictures of what I have done so far and post them later.
**Update 10/02/07**
Here are some pictures of what's been done so far.
These are of the front mounts. I notched a 3 inch square tube and welded it between the frame rails. It's .1875 inches thick and I capped the ends. I then notched 3.5 inch square tube to that to use as the front mounting point for the springs. These two pieces are .250 and the springs fits perfect inside them. All the trusses are .250 plate and the round tube that I used for the rear gusset is 1.75 inches by .134 wall.
Here are some pictures of the shackles and shackle mount. I uses 1.5 inch OD DOM tube because it fit the spring bushing perfect. I then drilled a 1.5 inch hole through the frame and welded the tube in place. The shackles are made from 2 inch by .250.
And here is how the truck looks sitting on the springs.
