Good Friend's 1990 Mustang
Head Swap
Here is what the swap envolves:
www.ls1howto.com
-AFR 205cc Mongoose (for Rikki Tikki Tavi) heads .024" milled (to 63cc combustion chambers) w/dual spring setup, along with their flow rate:
Actual photo's of the heads here:
More parts arriving:
Uh-Oh, the process has begun
Here is the crew and the tight space:
The actual work begining:
Next day, much better having friends help:
Me actually doing some work:
Process:
Old pushrods 7.400"
These pistons and deck surface are so dirty:
Getting better:
Almost there:
The dirty pistons needed a cleaning:
Yes it takes forever, but yes it can be done:
Alright here is the continual progress:
Time to get to the other side:
Yeah she's off:
The old passenger side graphite head gasket:
Starting to clean the the passenger side off:
Parts off so far:
A little more progress:
Lifters are next, followed by a little more cleaning of the head decks. Then air cleaning out the bolt holes, removing my current exhaust set-up putting in the new. Soaking new lifters re-installing those along with the lifter trays. Clean everything one last time with brake cleaner and air dry. Then I will put on one of the new head gaskets and one of the new heads. Next I will torque down that head (probably drivers side) and install pushrod length checker on both intake and exhuast and measure at the same time checking PTV. Once everything checks out install correct length pushrods. Then install other head torque down, and install new pushrods on that side. Then comes putting back on the new exhaust, installing the roller rockers, valve covers. Installing the water pump comes next. Then I will do the LS6 PCV conversion in the valley. Install the intake manifold, Lid, MAF, and fire Rikki Tikki Tavi up.
Alright I am in the removal of the old exhaust and replacing it with a legal type:
Alright got all the old exhaust off and now I figure I will change some fluids and take off the old driveshaft measure and get a new one. So I have decided Denny's Driveshafts will build my next shaft:
So here is the measuring for the new driveshaft (note: pinion yolk should be horizontal for proper measuring):
Here is the actual driveshaft how it arrived, (thanks UPS), and then after repainting by myself:
So more photos of getting the driveshaft in and all bolted down with the 1350 series pinion yolk 20 ft/lbs is needed on the u-joint bolts:
The new y-pipe from Random Tech which look great. I am thinking that I need to have a custom set pipes made to swap out with the cat pipes...
Here is the Edelbrock Shorty's CA legal headers with Random Tech Cats bolted up (if you look carefully you can see the AIR & EGR block off plates already installed):
An inside look at the o2 sensor installe in the header on the vehicle!
Alright a little progress! Here are is a lifter tray, followed by pictures of the lifters in the hole, make sure you clean everything out including the little cruddles as seen in the bottom left photo:
The deck surfaces almost entirely clean:
Lifters, then lifters going in their soak:
Here is something nice which I pretty much had to do go from perimeter bolt valve covers to center bolts style:
Alright the begining of the end, the main thing I am going to say here is 106 inch pounds of torque is defenitly not 22 ft/lbs as I found out the hard way (I will fill in later):
So well I was at it I figured get rid of the old battery and replace her with the optima red top (75/25-910):
Here it actually is:
Darn it so once again I stumbled but being super careful pays off I ordered a ARP thread chaser 11x2.0mm ARP part#912-0011 to super clean the bolt holes on the head which means a new set of head bolts, and a lot more work taking a head back off!
Here are some actual pictures of it:
This tool gets MVT (most valuable tool) by far it was great here are shots of it in action:
Alright back in action and good to go!
A few little extra things, here is the actual Comp cams break in fluid (mainly for the new lifters), as well as a new oil filler neck, forget trying to get the old one out:
Just a little more progress:
Woohoo!!!! More progress:
Here is a great shot of the line on the head bolt that you draw as reffered to by the www.ls1howto.com :
Progress is awesome!
Well I was at it I figured I would replace belts and o2 sensors:
Here is the o2 sensor inside the header as well as the gator back belt on:
And then I figured well I gots to be going to the drags of course, so here are Mufflex cat delete pipes, on the bottom they are compared to the catted Random Tech sections:
The actual Mufflex pipes on as well as the o2 bung plug I need when running them:
So the catch can setup has to be updated for the new LS6 PCV system:
I made the decision via advice from my dyno-tuner (synergymotorsports.net ) to but in the new style knock sensors and sensor clip:
Got the water pump back on and all the belts:
Alright even more progress I am on the brink of being done, I had to order a new set of intake manifold gaskets because I forget to get new ones!
Here we go a motor again:
SUPER AWESOME!!! A video of me firing it up for the first time with the heads on just click here
Final driveable:
At work the day after!
