The previous owner (Peter) bought this Monaco in 1982. He rebuit the motor, painted the car in Laquer and had the seats and door panels reupholstered. He drove the car in two parades and the motor was running hot both times. He could not figure out what was wrong so he parked the car in a shed and let it sit there for 15 years. He had 10 other cars. It's amazing how a car can fall apart after sitting for that long. Didn,t run, fadded paint, rusted chrome, broken tail lights, no brakes, ect. But it only had 100,000 miles on it. Thus the project begun.
I bought the car from Peter in August 1999. It almost made the 2 mile drive to my house. Did I mention that I forgot to tell the wife that it only had 2 doors and no roof. I went out to buy the 1993 Buick Station Wagon. You should have seen the look on her face when I got home.
I got to meet the origional owner (George) at a car show in 2000. I met his daughter, her husband and children at a car show Last summer. She told her children that she drove a car just like mine when she was in High School. She started to cry when I told her that this was her dad's car. It was the first Fathers Day since her dad passed away. This is a local Car and I have now met all the previous owners. The Monaco was bought new at Penner Dodge here in Winnipeg. Some of the origional paperwork came with the car.
This Monaco has a 383 4brl.,727 automatic transmission, 323 shure grip posi rear end and duel exhaust. The bucket seats and consol give it a sporty look inside. The interior (seats, door panels, dash, ect.) was actually made for the 1966 Plymoth Sport Fury. Right down to the red, white and blue Plymoth emblems. This is the only Dodge modle that I have seen with a Plymoth Interior. That is how you can tell the differance between a Monaco Convertible and a Polara Convertible or the US built Monacos. I recieved a copy of a letter from Chrysler Canada Customer Service, dated 1982, stating that there were only 552 - 1966 Monaco Convertibles built. The Monaco Convertible was only built and sold in Canada. Chrysler estimates that there are only about 50 of these cars left on the road today. That is why you rearly ever see one.
I have added a few parts to the car; Wiend aluminum intake, Edelbrock carb.,double roller timing chain and gears, 440 purple shaft cam and lifters, Chrysler electronic ignition, 452 open chamber heads, 440 HP exhaust manifolds, Magnaflow stainless steel mufflers, new floor pan, new carpet, 6 way power seats, new tranny, tork converter and many, many, more parts. If it could be replaced, it was replaced. I still have most of the origional Factory parts in boxes. The rims are 1982 Chrysler - Kelsey Hayes 10 Spoke aluminum wheels. I wanted to keep it Mopar. I have been restoring this car for going on 10 years now. It's starting to look and run nice now.
2009 - Every year I try to do something to improve the Monaco. This year I have installed an origional factory 1966 interior. This included door panels, seats, and some trim peices. For the trunk area I now have an origional trunk mat, a complete jack assembly, Spare tire hold down and the jack instructions. The factory door panels and seats are so much nicer than the aftermarket ones. The ones in the pictures below are the aftermarket ones.
Well the 44 year old Factory interior looks great. It actually looks like a new interior. Added new door handles, lock nobs, armrest backing plates, ashtray and lighter. It is almost winter here so time to stop working on the car till next year.
A gentleman who lives abot 6 hours from here came to look at the Monaco last week. He says he wants buy my car. I told him that it is not for sale. He said tht he would be back in the spring with a trailer. We'll see. Money talks, BS walks.
