After this, I contacted an engine builder who had recently built the engine and tranny for my buddies 1963 rag top bug and worked out what I wanted, some special tuning aspects I wanted for the tranny and oh yeah, could he rebuild the brake system and raise the front end back up a few inches. After 2 months of wondering how everything was going and such (his shop was out in the O.C. and i ws in Studio City...) and a few calls asking about progress and reconfirming that I was going to be able to pick up my car at his self appointed deadline, i was constantly told "Oh yeah, she's almost ready, so it shouldn't be any problem." I guess that should have been my first warning... So the day the car is to be done, I call up just to be safe and with a confirmation from him make the trek out to the O.C. with my wife in her 2006 Beetle. Well, we finally get there after a whole lot of fun in traffic and pull in to see my car with 4 people standing around it and it didn't look reay at all. I then find my "mechanic" and ask him what's up with the car? Well, I get 15 excuses from here to Sunday and finally just say "Look man, I gave what you wanted down, I gave you plenty of time to have all this stuff taken care of and I even called before coming out here...what the hell?" So he then starts to tell me about all the additonal parts he had used (without notifying me on any of them) and that he needed at least a week more. Well, I then got him to stick to his original price of what i had actually approved done and get a guarantee that he will drop it off the following weekend. Well, I get the car back finally the next weekend, and she does run...but choppy as hell as he "didn't have time to tune the carbs and just threw them on a few hours before driving up, so..." Anyway, come to find that the motor is what and how I wanted it, the tranny is smooth and after fiddling with the carbs, she's running pretty good other than some serious back firing due to the old headers leaking under back pressure. So this is what she lookedlike when I got her back (oh, and with grease smears on 2 of my new door panels).
