1978 Corvette Indy Pace Car
In 1978 the Corvette was chosen to pace that year's Indy 500. As a result, Chevrolet produced a special limited edition Pace Car replica which featured their own unique vehicle identification numbers, and a special black and silver two tone paint scheme with red striping. Chevrolet originally planned on making 300 to match the production number from 1953, the first year of the Corvette. Concern from the dealerships on who would get the 300 resulted in Chevrolet producing 6,502 replica Pace Cars, one per dealership. All 1978 Corvettes came with special 25th anniversary emblems.
March 27th, 1978 - The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page article about the 1978 Chevrolet Indy 500 Pace Cars, indicating they would be excellent investment. This "Limited Edition Pace Car" was in such a demand in 1978 that despite it's $13,653 sticker price, people were paying uo to $75,000 for these cars.
This Pace Car featured here is #4851 out of 6502 made. It was sold on May 18, 1978 at Paul Tonkin Cheverolet in Portland, Oregon. The normal sticker price for this as stated above was $13,000 but this car was sold new with 30 miles for $21,500.
This Pace Car is all original except stereo, and billet aluminum door sill plates, and currently has 92,645 miles. I have most of all original documentation that came with this car to include owners manual, warranty info card, maintence schedule, original sales reciept, and the first vehicle title.
