The car was a weekend driver while I lived in the dorms at UNC; the car sat stock aside from basic maintenance and a new alternator. I finally moved out into a house with some friends, got a better paying job, and been modding since then.
First mod was clear corner turn signals from 3sx, along with custom Robo-lights. I took apart the headlights, painted everything gloss black inside except for the chrome rings around the lights, then glued it back together. Sounds easy but it took a long time cuz it was my first mod + I had to sand down all the metal parts and crevices by hand. Updates the car to a more 'modern' look. JOHNNY-5 agrees.
First performance mod! Bought an ebay chrome intake pipe that came with a crappy filter, drove straight to Autozone and picked up a 4" K&N intake. Made the car sound a litlte nicer, climbed the revs faster as well.
Next mod (no pics) was a test pipe, it was like intake x7 (literally). Sounded better at idle and a lot better at full throttle. I tried to do it myself for like 2 days, but there was way too much rust. 2 bottles of PB Blaster, a normal ratchet wrench, and PURE MUSCLE under 4 jack stands just wasn't enough. I really wish I owned a lift...a breaker bar would be nice too haha. Just gotta find a nice big pipe somewhere.
I bought an LDO iPod car charger and hardwired it by tapping into the power from the cig lighter.
Got rid of the car phone and fitted some anti-slip dash pad stuff to the car phone mount. H/u has an aux-in, and now I got all my tunes in my car while still looking pretty stock.
Decided to get a radar detector to avoid any more tickets (I drive near grandma style half the time, but I got screwed twice - both for speeding, first was when I had the car packed and everyone wanted to see what the car could do, 2nd was in VA when the cop picked me cuz I was last in the 'caravan'). After doing some research, the Whistler Pro 78 was consistently rated the best 'bang for buck' radar detector, only $130ish, and I haven't gotten a ticket yet so far. It's def saved me a few times, well worth the money.
Got some tint done by a local guy who was cool, Pete - TVP Auto was the name of his place iirc. Nice guy, decent job at a good price. Tint compliments the car really well, I love the privacy.
Also did some minor touchup paint here and there, most of the original paint looks good but 18 years takes it's toll. Luckily the previous owner mostly garaged it and parked it at work, same here. It's not garaged now, but I wash the car at least every other week. Also bought a new chrome Mitsubishi emblem for the bumper from 3sx and replaced a dented exhaust tip.
Ordered a ground wire kit from BigTyla aka Topline Engineering, great quality product. Improved the throttle response, voltage increased a bit at idle, and it'll be useful when I upgrade audio.
Picked up a pair of Infinity Reference 6012i 2-way speakers and put them in the doors with only minor modification needed.
Next mod was the biggest yet - eK2 downpipe and front precat eliminator AND gutting my rear precat. The exhaust bolts came loose a lot easier this time, only had to use 1 bottle of PB Blaster. The o2 sensors were tough though, had to maneuver the wrench the right way...ugh. Then I used a drill and chisel to gut the rear precat, it was like adding insult to injury. I had to hold my breath every time I drilled, and stuff kept falling in my eyes. Got it done though.
Great mod, exhaust note sounds a lot better esp after 3k+ rpm, but not annoyingly loud. Nice to lay low when around cops. eK2 seriously makes a great product, 2 flex sections, a hangar, o2 bungs, front bank joins the rear in a y-pipe...couldn't ask for better fitment.
Then I picked up an Ultimate Performance Intake wall - decreases the air temp about 30-50 degrees (Faranheit) at the intake filter.
Also made a "fresh air intake" using a funnel and some pvc piping to bring up nice cold air from the side vent in the bumper to the intake filter, and the intake wall keeps all that cold air trapped in there, keeping the temps down. Painted it with Duplicolor high temp engine enamel, gloss black.
Bought some aluminum mesh and made a grill for all the openings the bumper to prevent rocks/etc. from hitting the radiator and to hide the funnel in the side vent.
Picked up a carbon fiber universal accessory holder that fits in my dash vent, nothing special but now I might put my car phone back in and I like the carbon fiber part, ricer though it may be. Paying $0.01 is not ricer though, it is BALLER. -edit: I removed my car phone and modified it so I could mount the iPod holder onto it's base, which is where it's currently located-
