The old system's Image Dynamics CTX6s. They're mounted in Metra speaker adapters. The stock door speakers were 4x6", and the adapters allow for up to 6 1/2" speakers (but not 7"). These were great coaxials, but it was time for an upgrade...
The new Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 mids. They are mounted on the same Metra speaker adapters. The cones on these beauties look great, but it's the cool cast aluminum baskets (not shown) that steal the show. Cascade Audio VB-2HD damping sheet is applied to the entire inner door frame. Unfortunately, there isn't enough room on the inner frame to reach through and apply damping to the outer panel. The only real option for total damping would be to use VB-1X spray.
Although not quite an exact match, the tweeter's mounting hardware was painted gray. After a coat of primer and then gray paint, a top coat of clear matte finish was applied. They definately look better than the original black hardware.
The passive 2-way crossovers were installed in the lower pockets of the doors. These assemblies are quite impressive, and house top-notch components. The mounting holes, however, are dangerously close to live wires - my amp has gone into protection a couple of times when the wires shorted out intermittently.
Back side of the door panel showing tweeter mounting hardware and speaker/crossover/neon wiring. If you look real closely, you'll notice the tweeter uses different wire - I ran out of the normal Lightning Audio 15 gauge!
Close up of the door's wiring. 6-pin Molex plugs are soldered onto the wires to allow for easier door panel removal (upper right). The entire back side of the door panels were coated with Cascade Audio VB-1 damping paste.
Street Glow mini neon tubes are mounted below the crossovers and light up the entire assemblies with a brilliant blue glow. They are controlled by the right switch under the radio. As soon as I saw the translucent cases of the crossovers, I knew we could do something creative with lighting.
Here's a crossover at night. The Street Glow mini neon tubes are quite bright and look great. These pictures don't do justice - the neon really lights up the whole crossovers and spills into the seats and footwells. Cool!
A neon tube looking down into the door pocket where the crossover is. The neon tubes still need to be centered and fastened into place.
With all this great Street Glow neon being installed, Le Femme Wilburta is going to look like a Hong Kong disco at night! Neon installation pictures are on page 6. More pictures coming soon, including the new stobe control module and neon music interface module installation.
UPDATE: Well, more pictures would have been coming, if all my electronics didn't get stolen (again). New dash pictures (sans radio) coming soon...
